Is there any way of telling whether it has been 'run-in' sympathetically?

There are schools of thought that suggest pussy footing about with a new engine is bad for it, they require hard work before they harden to smooth off the peaks, or something. I'm not a mechanical engineer, you might have guessed, but it doesn't seem to make a difference nowadays.

Seeing as you just advertised it to 3324 other riders, it's probably best to go get it quickly.

Running in probably has more to do with the tyres and the rider than the engine needing mollycoddling for the first few hundred miles. I've bough ex demo bikes before, and I suspect that they get the full Italian tune-up style of running in, with no ill effect.

Most dealer bikes get ridden unsympathetically from day one. The break in school of thought I subscribe to more or less takes this as the best way to do it :) I wouldn't worry about it, at that price it's a good deal if you're in the market for one.
