Grease build up on gear box
« on: August 08, 2014, 13:56:41 »
Hello Group -

I am new to this group having just purchased a 2005 DL1000. I love it and am really excited to be back on two wheels.

I fairly thick when it comes to mechanics, so pls bear with me. I hope someone can appease my concern here.
I have been riding for 6 weeks now. I noticeds yesterday some grease build up on my shifter (?) and looked closer to see where the source was coming from. It apeears to be from the gear box. IS this normal?

I Have only riden about 1000 KM since buying the bike. I bought it from a dealer and it was serviced prior to me taking ownership.

I Have photos but can not seem to upload them through this discussion forum....you know a picture says a thousands words..

ANy advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you mean from behind the front sprocket cover this is normal, grease is flung off the chain and collects in there, simply remove the sprocket cover and scrape it all out and you should be good for a long while.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

Hi DB100 and  :welcome:

Pop over to Introductions and say hello.

Here's some pictures of my bike's front sprocket just before a clean.

After a good clean, I got the two looking quite good. That last little bit in the corner of the cover needed parafin to get clean.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

+1 for using paraffin, few things as good as it for cleaning greasy stuff. Just make sure you have a plastic container below to everything so it's easy to clean up.
