Now that you've had all the sympathies, how about the exhaust? The vulture cannot wait much longer

The crash bars are Heed and have not bent, but have been ground down by maybe 5mm in places. Some of the damage done to the bike were from Bambi hitting the bike and myself..Mostly the broken beak and my shattered shoulder. There is no damage to the engine cases but plenty of minor scuffles to the tank plastic bits. The brake levers are both broken and the front brake didn't work.Luckily the four bottles of beer(wrapped in a Asda  bottle bag with a fluorescent jacket crammed in)are happily intact.I as wondering if the beak on the front of the bike may of some how confused or alarmed the deer.Just a idea .

Very sorry to read this and I hope you and your son recover full fitness soon. IMHO wild deer especially in urban environments are vermin that should be culled. Where one crosses a road another thirty follow.  So many times I have been lucky to have seen the blighters in time.  Not always little harmless things either. I recently rode past a stag, that stood at the side of a 'B' road with a "c'mon if you're hard enough look about him. It's full set of aerials were level with my face!

Please keep us up to date with your recovery and how things go with your insurance company and the repair.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can. Nothing travels faster than the speed of time.

Was joking

Anyway, I still think you are better off repairing the bike yourself. What was the excess on the insurance? If you take that into account and add a couple of hundred (at the most) you will be able to repair the bike.

Most of the items/parts can be bought relatively cheaply online anyway. The crash bars can be repaired and if bent, can be straightened easily. The best way to do it is to stand the bike straight (after you have repaired everything else), tie the other side that is not bent to a concrete post or a tree or something like that and tie the bent part to a winch and winch it out to straighten it. I've done it twice, once when I went down on a road and the second time when I bought a crash bar from a bike breakers. Both times it came out fine. The little scruff can be filled and rounded up and sprayed to look like new.

The other parts such as levers, foot rests etc are just standard and you can pick them up cheap from breakers or eBay. Even the exhaust can be repaired.

Good luck and speedy recovery.

All the best. I've missed two Roe deer lately one with the car and one with the bike. Dorset is crawling with them (and badgers). It's about time they were thinned out.

If your helmet was damaged then they have to replace it.
It's the only piece of ppe that has to be replaced by law if damaged.

Sorry to hear about your accident. I sustained similar injuries a couple of years ago, but I was only doing 20mph.
I read the comment regarding deer whistles, sounded a good idea. However, googling 'deer whistles' also pulled up this link which suggests the claims are BS :

There is no way to convince deer to avoid traffic. They know it's there. They just don't know what to do about it. Their evolutionary development did not include cars and bikes as predators. Deer reactions to vehicles are totally unpredictable.

One thing for sure is that deer hear in about the same frequency range as humans, not dogs. If you aren't bothered by a deer whistle, neither are the deer.

You must be mad...  lol

Good to hear the bike will be back soon. I always get 'bikes are really dangerous, don't you worry you'll be killed' - no one says that about my car though.

Hope you recover as quick as the bike  :thumb:
