I feel a can of worms coming on here... Strictly speaking this would be regarded as a car oil with the API SL spec., but I would be happy using it in my bike. In fact I've been using same spec. but made by Mobil oil for the past 20,000 miles. I won't pay the silly premium prices for oils with "motorcycle" written on the label. A few years back a Honda Fireblade was run on GTX for 100,000 miles, stripped and inspected and no measurable wear found.....

As long as you can be sure that there are no friction reducing agents added to the oil then I'd be fine with using that myself. I've run the Strom on diesel truck oil before (Shell Rotella, it was fully synthetic though.)

Edit: I run the DR-Z on 'car' oil, it's the same spec as the Halfords motorcycle oil. Mobil Super 2000 10W-40.

Somebody once asked Castrol what the difference was between the car oil and the motorcycle oil. The reply was the difference was the label.

In many years I've known 1 motorcycle wet clutch that didn't like car oil with friction reducers. I've only known a few people take the risk though, call it 1 failure in 5 attempts (and a couple of those were not out of choice). I've known hundreds of us pay the premium for the knowledge that we'd have a slight chance of complaining if it did slip. The failure rate here in my limited experience is also 1, call it 1 in 500 (and complaining to the oil company had no effect).

I think a court of law would have to dismiss the case for the prosecution, the bookies would walk away, politicians would sit on the fence and insurance companies would charge a high premium against failure.

Are you that bothered about saving a few quid? Are you someone who wants to go first trying things? Is this the only oil you can get?

Whatever I save on oil can go for fuel :) I also don't see a reason to pay more for "motorcycle" oil if a cheaper "car" oil does the job just as well.

I know someone who had to top up an R1 in Scotland with a litre of car oil as that's all he could get, the clutch started slipping the same day.

It's not going to happen with 10W-40. Energy conserving oils that are bad for wet clutches are almost always in the 0W-20 to 5W-30 range. There are very few 10W-40 oils with the energy conserving mark and it is not a widely available brand. http://vmaxoutlaw.com/tech/motorcycle_oil.htm

I had a friend crash his GSX600 last year, holed the crankcase, he lost a lot of oil, rode 60 miles to the nearest garage and bought 5 ltrs of car oil (at £9 a ltr!) the bike took 3ltrs to reach the full mark and we then rode 40 miles to Inverness where we bought and applied a liquid metal patch to the hole and bought more car oil to bring it back up to the full mark, it had used all of the 5ltrs of oil bought initially and we hasd ridden briskly. We then rode at high speed back to Stonehaven, over 100 miles - he had no clutch slip at all.

Oil flushed and a new crank case cover and he was good to go (did the same thing to the same side 6 months later by Dunkeld - filled with car oil again etc etc).

So not all car oils cause slip.

It's not car oil v. motorcycle oil that's a problem if the correct weight is used. The problem is energy conserving v. non energy conserving and energy conserving is almost never available in the correct weight.

Like I said "a can of worms".... Discussions on forums about oils and tyres for bikes is about as thought provoking and absorbing as the ladies (or men?) in our lives discussing shoes, hanbdbags and face creams....

He should be more careful.

I agree, we 've tried unsucessfully to coax him into some further training to no avail. He is no longer allowed out in our group as we don't trust him any longer.

Cause the first time: following too close/braking hard just prior to a deep ford (the water, not the car) on tarmac with loose gravel strewn about. Luckily missed the bike in front and nearly ended up in the ford.

Cause the second time: sudden rear braking in damp LH corner (75mph corner, 40odds entry speed - why he braked I don't know). Slid right across the bend. Left oil everywhere and rode off. I stayed behind for nearly 2 hours to warn other motorists, call police & wait for council to sort out the oil left on the bend  :angry-tappingfoot:

The council tried to bill me for the call out too!
