vstrom 650 power
« on: January 08, 2014, 08:26:56 »
Hi all,

Me popping up again!

Still got my heart set on a vstrom and I think this year will be the one.

I am looking at a new style 650 but I'm wondering if it's got enough 2 up power.

I'm not expecting it to fly but l just really want to know if we're 2 up on ghee motorway or a country lane, there's enough power for overtaking.

Wanted experienced peoples opinions.

Thanks

Adam

What's your location. Always handy for prospective sellers to contact you if bikes are for sale. :)

Two years ago, went down to Croatia two up with top box and panniers, and the bike crusied happily at a GPS 80mph, went up the Grossglockner and Vrisic passes, all with no problems and never feeling it was underpowered.

Last year went down to the French Alps two up with the same luggage and only for about 30 seconds would I have liked some more power when a local in a turbo car didn't want to be overtaken at 5000', and climbing up a fairly steep climb. We still got past it though  :)

On country roads it has enough, sure you'll get more of a buzz if it had 150bhp, but then you'll probably need all the traction controls / power modes that seems to come with that power. And, how often does anyone have the throttle fully open in any gear below 4th? Not very often I'd guess, in which case you don't really need any extra power. The extra power does make for a lazier ride as you could just opn the throttle on the 150bhp rocket ship and accelerate fastly, where the Glee etc might need a change down of gear to get similar acceleration.

Might be worthwhile test riding the new litre v-strom to see if it matches your needs / ability.

We went to France and Germay last year 2 up with luggage and it was fine. Yes, there will be the odd occasion when another 40bhp would be useful for a rapid overtake but 99% of the time the Glee has enough (for me). It is amazingly economical as well. Test ride is the answer of course.

2 up - 80+ on motorways no problem. Climbing steep roads in Snowdonia, no problem. All day comfy for 2.

Two up I think it's absolutely fine as I don't ride it like I stole it with a pillion. The times I miss extra power is on the odd overtake when solo, where I either don't overtake or wish I had more power to get the pass done quicker.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the feedback & replies.

I have test ridden one, although I also find it useful to real world feedback rather than a short 30 mins or so on a ride out.

I am trying to work out whether to get an older 1000 or a newer 650, although I think budget is going to lean me more towards an older 1000.

Thanks again for all feeback, I will also add location to my profile, thanks for the tip

Just get an older 650 and save on the fuel, I found on my recent play on the new 1000 I had to change gear more were as on the 650 you can just roll the power on when you are going that bit slower, I found at the same speed you had too drop down a gear or two.

The 650 is more than capable 2 up, most times I go out my girlfriend comes along, and we've ridden up some steep hills going at 60mph steady all the way up. There was one point I remember going 70mph because I just wasn't concentrating and was enjoying it too much as I'd came from my weakling CBR125.

I believe a 650 would be more than adequate, especially including the fuel savings you'd make.

You can tell a difference in power, when riding 2-up compared to solo but it feels so minimal (to me at least, as I said, I rode a CBR125 with my girlfriend pillion, and getting that thing to 40mph 2-up took forever).
