FAO South Yorkshire Strommers
« on: September 20, 2013, 18:29:11 »
Hi,

Is there a mechanically minded, South Yorkshire, Strommer that is kind enough to take a look at my bike? I'm having difficulty with with clutch and no amount of faffing from me is improving it. Junk food/beer/other vice can be proved as a thanks.

Incase you missed my thread, in summary, when warm it gets stuck in 1st and is very difficult to get out, along with clunky gear changes. Fine when cool and while warming up.

Any help would be appreciated, before I give in and book it in with a money paid mechanic.

Poke either Ptarmigan or longman, they are both close to you. Otherwise check the members map to find other people close to you.

A slack chain or a low oil level can give similar symptoms as well as a gear lever that needs a bit of adjustment.

I've checked everything I've read online, oil level, chain adjustment, clutch adjustment had a trial and error afternoon trying to improve it and no dice.

Then it is a good idea to get another pair of eyes on it. If you were closer to Rugby I'd offer to take a look, but if you can't find someone near and you feel like a ride you're welcome :thumb:

The 650 has a cable clutch. It has done it since I bought it, my test ride didn't last long enough to get up to high enough temperature for the symptoms to show up.

Juvecu, thanks for the kind offer, I might just take you up on it if a local cannot help.

I have not, to be honest, I'd rather not start replacing parts, trial and error, until I know the cause.

Sounds like it might be dragging when warm. Is the levers biting point really close to the bar?

Thanks for the offer gilly, but I'm calling by longman tomorrow for some help, hopefully, I just need to learn how to adjust the clutch properly.

Longman had a look, loosened my chain, it was too tight. Seems to be better, it isn't smooth out of first, but hasn't been stuck since. He suggested an oil change now.

I dropped the oil that the 'dealer' put in, it was like water, very think stuff. I've put some Halfords semi-synthetic bike oil in now.

Unfortunately I picked up a nail, so have a flat, so I'll not know until this afternoon. Taking the tyre to get repaired.

Right then blokes, an update.

After replacing the oil, with looser chain and after dropping the bike and been unable to pick it up alone, it seems much better. I also noticed the clutch lever had some up and down movement, so I tightened that too.

Thanks for the help, especially longman, hopefully this will be the end of my problems with it :D

Maybe dropping it didn't help too much. You did give me a better idea of how much slack the chain needs, so thanks. Do give me a nudge if there are any local ride outs and I'll see you on one.

Hopefully this the last of my problems and can do </thread>  :lala:
