Stripping and Repainting - Crash Bars
« on: August 06, 2013, 12:28:33 »
My crash bars are looking worse for wear, they have rust patches (where the paint has already broken off) and bubbles under the paint where rust has started to get a grip.

My question is this. Have any of you stripped and resprayed/painted your crash bars, or would you simply hand them to someone to sandblast and powercoat?

If you did your own, what method did you use?

I simply rubbed mine down on the bike and gave them a coat of hammerite smooth whilst still installed. They look OK from 6 foot. I recon powdercoating will give the best result though.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

After waiting 4 weeks for my bars to arrive they were scratched. Took them to a local powder coaters who did both bars for 25 quid. Told the company that this cost me 40 quid and was 15 quid in pocket :)

Mine's just been sent off for shot blasting and powder coating. They were powder coated to start with, but some of it chipped off and rust started. I also fell on the left side in a mossy ford so there are light scratches which I'm hoping will get covered now.

I've seen some pretty ropey Fords in my time, but never one that was so rough it was covered in moss!  lol
