DL1000 2008 set up.
« on: June 14, 2013, 19:34:13 »
I've just recently bought a 2008 vstrom DL1000, and just wondered how I can check the correct set up for me.

Can anyone please advise.

One problem I do notice, is that if I'm a gear at low revs, then open it up, it will start to pick up then flat spot (is this normal).

I'm just looking for general things to look out for and how to get the best out of my bike.

Thank you in advance.

alex.

I had one, great bike.  Get someone with a yoshi box to adjust the mixture a little bit, that will get rid of the emissions flatspot.  You may find it beneficial to get it on a dyno to get is spot on.  The motor is great once you've had this done.  Fit the big brakes on the front from the GSXR and SV-racing parts and them get the springs and a decent damper on it and raise it 50mm if you are tall enough.  Job done!!

Oh and find some cheap exhausts with no baffles.  :)

Thanks very much for that mucker. I'm 5ft 11 inches and had to lower it, as I was on my tip toes, not good lol
I'm at the farm yard next week, and may just use the free dyno and see how we go. I'll look at changing the other parts when the cash comes.

thanks again

My local garage yoshi'd mine.  I think he adjusted the mixture by about 1.5% throughout.  I found a thread on stromtrooper about it and used their settings, the bike was great after that.   It's still a bit lumpy, but its a twin so that's to be expected.  The brakes really suck though, that was the best mod I made.  Calipers off ebay, new pads and the conversion kit.  It stopped properly then.

I'll be changing the tyres first, as I have the tourers on (dual). I find that they aren't giving me the grip I want on the roads that I use. I'm looking at the Pirelli tyres that are recommended for it. As for the brakes, jeesus, they are bonk lol.

I had the death wings on my vee for 2500 miles.  Then went over to road attacks.  They grip a lot better but to be honest you can do a lot on the deathwings, perfectly good tyres, just have faith!!

Raising the fork stancions up through the clamps by about 20mm will sharpen the front end up and make it turn quicker and a fork brace is also well worth fitting and makes it track better on bad road surfaces. Fitting  braided hoses on the front brakes along with some EBC HH pads will help the brakes a lot and it's also worth  checking that the caliper sliders (it has single sided calipers) and the pistons are all free and not tight or seized. Adding a couple of teeth to the rear sprocket improves the acceleration and makes top gear much more useable without affecting the fuel consumption. I fitted a timing retard eliminator (TRE) and a pair of race cans, with baffles, that improved the performance and also made the low end running better.

I had a TRE fitted at one point too but removed it as the bike wasn't fuelling right, yoshi box was the way to go for me definitely.  Hookies right though either raising the rear or dropping the forks in the yokes sharpen the handling up a great deal.

I'd like to set mine up with a Yoshi box, but finding one here in rural France may be problem. Would a Massey Ferguson one fit? I know the fuelling isn't right, almost certainly running rich, so getting it right may well improve the fuel consumption, but it's much better than it was with the TRE and cans. It'll chug along very happily at 2-2,500RPM around town with no jerkiness at all and the cans are good for scaring old ladies and making children cry...

I've got a Yoshi box, you are welcome to pop in past and see me in Brechin & we can give your bike a tweak.

Nae charge, will even throw in free tea &/or coffee...Just give me a PM to set up a time if you want.

Same goes for anyone else, I bought the thing to do my bike, but hell, anyone can pop in and have a Yoshi tweak(s) for free, it'd be rude to charge for it.

Not done mine yet....its on the list of things to do!

Many thanks for the offer Abercol. Trouble is I'm in central France (something over 900 miles from you!) and don't know when I'm likely to be back in the UK on the bike.

I'm off to Normandy in July...would have been Nimes if I'd got my way!

Planning another trip next year if things go well (taking mother-in -law for the first time, so it may not go well...) if so, will def. be going further South and will take Yoshi box with me if that's the case.

Then again, if you fancy a long ride out I can take it with to Normandy, staying not too far from Mamers.

But the offer of the Yoshi still stands....come one come all for free fettling, Got to be better than paying a dealer £50 to do the same thing.

No problem Alex, the offer is open, be good to meet any fellow Strommers, especially us Veezers  :)

Kodkod, Just remember I'm here, so if you do decide to do a tour (or brief visit) of Scotland just give me a shout and hopefully we can sort it out, can't take more than a few mins to do the standard mod as advised on Stromtrooper & if you want/need more then no probs, happy to spend time with like minded strommer.
