Rough price for a service and check over
« on: June 21, 2013, 22:01:51 »
Evening,

I'm currently struggling to find time to service my Vee, and am wondering if it'd just be easier for me to take her somewhere, and pay them.

I want to do oil and filter, air filter clean, check valve clearances plus a going over to check chain tension etc.

Can anyone give me a ballpark figure for this? I'm not going to a Suzuki, merely a bike mechanic.

Cheers

How longs a piece of string? Depends on mechanic. I'd guess around £150ish :shrug:

Valve clearance service (including oil change, filter checks/changes, plugs etc), assuming no valves need changing, will cost around £350 at a dealer and around £200-£250 at an independent, it's a 3.5 to 4 hour job, chances are the dealer will charge you the 4 hour book price and the independent will charge you the 3.5 hours it actually takes him.

If any valves need adjusting then it will cost more, not just for the parts, but the time it takes to replace the shims.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

Cheers for the thoughts. That sort of money has me thinking it's daft me not doing it myself. One weekend soon.... Honest.

Easier? Yes. Cheaper? No.

Oil = £30
Oil Filter = £10
Air Filter = £10 (a cleanup is done with some compressed air)
Valves = Free to check
Chain = Free

You chain should have a few cm play each way , I think the book says 2cm each way. Tightening it is a 10 minute job if you have a centre stand.
