Givi Bars and/or knees (Can I have both!)
« on: February 10, 2013, 17:14:17 »
I have not yet had the pleasure of a tarmac introduction while riding (other than a 50cc when I was 16), but kind of know it is always a risk. At the same time I am looking at going on ST6. So I am considering some Engine Bars.

The question is, I have looking at various photo's of bars fitted to bikes and looking at where my knees come to on mine. There doesn't look like there is much, if any space left to fit both.

So can any of the taller riders tell me whether they have seen any problems, or is one particular brand of Engine Bars a better shape than any others? The one perspective I can't judge from the photo's is how far out the bars are from the bike.

I'm 6ft 3 and my wife is 6ft.  We both have sw motech bars on our 1000 and 650 respectively.  We've never had any problems with our knees on the bikes if that helps.

Can't comment on other makes of bars which come higher though.

I've seen rare reports of tall riders hitting sliders, but never crash bars.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

I'm 6'3" and have the Suzuki bars on a Glee with no issues... Appear to have escaped the vibration problems that have affected some too.

You should be OK with most engine bars unless your over 7 foot ...

Thanks for the replies. Looks like Greywolf would be right on the sliders, they would press on my shins.

Givi said ... "I cannot advise you other than to say that we can only design our products for the average as it is impossible to make a one size fits all and I would suspect that you may fall outside the average so would hesitate to recommend that you buy it".

Can anyone take a photo of the bars, both side on and vertically from above? I would appreciate that if someone can.

Maybe OK with the Touring Seat and a peg lowering kit ?

Do a Google image search of 2012 v-strom crash bars. There are many types and you'll see a lot of pictures with a couple of different mounting points. I see no reason to limit the choice to Givi. The rearmost Givi attachment is further back than some.

I went ahead and got the Givi Engine Bars.

I have just about enough space to put my fingers round my knee before I hit the bars, so it was close but is OK.

Before anyone says "This thread is worthless without pics", you can see for youself on ST6.
