The cams on the 1000 use both chains and gears. It is a very reliable system and only bettered by the all gear driven cams like on Honda's VFR750/800, and no scheduled maintenance is required after initial installation at the factory. The only time the cam chains might need checking would in the event of a problem with the tensioning system, which I've never heard of, or an engine strip and rebuild for some other reason. So don't worry about it. All that needs checking is the valve clearances every 14,000 miles.
