It depends on the care given them and the conditions they run in. http://www.stromtrooper.com/v-strom-ser ... chain.html seems to indicate 20,000 miles being the mean. I got 23,000 - 25,000 miles except for one chain that had some links that came with no lube sealed inside that got less than half that.

I replace sprockets with chains. Some people report front sprockets wearing out before the chain does while others flip the front sprocket for re-use when changing the chain. Some use two chains for each rear sprocket.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

I always change the chain and both sprockets at the same time, but this time I've noticed the chain and rear sprocket still have decent life in them yet the front has worn slightly oval and begining to hook, causing it to try and pull chain back round on its self causing cluncking on pull away. Aftermarket £9 front sprocket has cured that!

I've done just over 20K on mine, will probably change it at next service along with sprockets.  Its looking good with a sprinkling of surface rust at the moment. Looks good in brown

George, sure you weren't looking at my bike. Sounds identical to mine currently!

Have just had a new chain and sprocket put on today, only done 12000 miles.
Think the bloke who had bike before me never oiled it!
Some links were very stiff, that's even though I fitted a pd oiler
£150 for a DID chain and sprocket supplied and fitted

Isn't it pretty the way the road salt crystalises on the chain oil?

Don't have that problem - my Scottoiler is turned to "Anti-Tailgate mode..."
