Wee L2 Red Warning Light
« on: February 01, 2013, 16:44:25 »
Just had the red warning light on the clocks turn on during my ride home on the motorway.  Pulled over and had a look but couldn't see anything wrong.  Start the bike up again and continue on my way and it stays on for a minute of two longer then flashes and goes off...?

Is this normal or should I be worried?  The spy hole says the oil is full when the bike is on it's centre stand so I'm a bit confused...

Do you mean the light within the circle under the rev counter needle? If so, turn off the engine as soon as it is safe to do so. The oil pressure or the coolant temperature is in the danger range. Check the number of bars in the temperature gauge or an oil can symbol to the right of the light to see if oil pressure or overheating is indicated. Running the engine with low oil pressure will ruin it in short order. Oil level is not enough. The oil pump must be working properly. If you are lucky, a loose wire or bad sensor may be the problem. If the oil pump is the culprit though, it can take less than a minute for cams running dry to ruin the heads. Overheating will take longer to ruin the engine, but it isn't safe to continue running for long.

It was the red light under the ice warning light. I think the oil LCD was on but like I said it went off again after a minute or two.  The temperature gauge was normal. Should the light be on when starting the bike before hitting the ignition? If it is normal to be on at first, is the bike safe to ride as the light is off or should I take it to the dealer?

The engine should not be run with the oil light on, not even for a minute. The light should only be on when the engine is not running. If you don't do your own work, have it looked at. It should be under warranty. Hopefully, It's only the connection or the sensor and the bike has not been run with low oil pressure. If the oil pressure was actually low, make sure the dealer checks the cam shafts and journals for damage.
