V-strom Center Stand for 1000cc
« on: September 10, 2012, 14:44:07 »
Hi, without going in the the embarressing story of me breaking my center stand on the bike I picked up yesterday, what is the best replacement stand for the v?

On a totally unrelated note.... What is your technique for getting the bike onto the center stand?

When you park, park using the side stand first. Get off, put you left hand on the left handlebar grip and your right hand (palm down!) on the rear luggage rack. Use your right foot to ligthly push the centre stand down until the "foot" touches the ground. At this point the bike is still on the side stand and only one "foot" on your centre stand is touching the ground. Now push the bike upright while keeping the centre stand foot on the ground. You will feel, through your right foot that's on the stand, when the other "foot" of the centre stand touches the ground on the other side. At this point you push down on the centre stand while at the same time you pull up with your hand on the luggage rack. Imagine having an elastic band between your foot and your right hand and stretch the band. You don't need any real strength to get a bike on a centre stand, it's pretty much all technique and I'd say the most important of that is to have both centre stand feet touching the ground. If you feel that you have to exert a lot of effort to get the bike on the stand you're doing it wrong. You can do this barefoot and you won't even hurt your foot if you do it right.

ps. Shees this is difficult to explain without being confusing. It's so much easier to show someone.

Edit:  you can probably just search YouTube for an instructions video if my explanation doesn't do it for you :)

Cheers for that.  I did have someone show me on a bike during my CBT but that was a very long time ago.

Anyone recommend a good after market stand?

I must say that the forum is very forgiving to a newbie like me :-)

Not tried it barefoot, but I often find myself after I've got back home, putting the bike away in my slippers. It really is just technique.

How is it broken, can you not get the broken one repaired?

BTW, we like embarassing stories and we'd never laugh at you for it  :) :liar:

It has snapped just after where the bar you stand on joins the foot.  At the snap I can see rust as well so I am not blaming it on me being heavey footed while both feet were not on the ground ;-)

So all it needs is the foot repaired, at least by the sound of it. A local shop charged me £20 to weld up a broken exhaust mount. I can't think it'd be much more than £50 to get the centre stand fixed. Take it off  yourself and clean it up nicely to get rid of all the rust first (on both the stand and the piece that broke off. Then find a place with a good welder and he'll probably be able to weld it so that it ends up being stronger than it was to start with. Bit of black Hammerite to cover the weld and you're good to go again with a few beer tokens spare to boot.

Now that I have had a closer look at it. It had split on the existing weld and the other foot is rusting.

So back to my original question. Which is a decent after market center stand ?

SW Motech might also do one for the Vee and it'll be a quality part without a doubt.

As a man who has all of those things (and said the same thing before I got them all) let me assure you that you won't be happy... you'll just "need to buy" other things... ad-infinitum!

I know... That how it all starts.  Nothing like tickering with mecanics whilst the other half is watching soaps.

This gave me a little smile... My list of things I want (need) is growing all the time, just trying to get the "essentials" sorted for now

Heated Grips
Crash Bars

The rest are nice to haves as I don't get any real buffeting on the stock screen or mirrors but they don't look great so will have to go at some point!!
