Sat Nav data accuracy
« on: July 09, 2012, 19:58:20 »
Just been looking at some of the data that my Sat Nav has recorded and I am horrified at how inaccurate it is and whether this could be used against you in a court of law, an example of what I am supposed to have done:

12:14:18 - 0ft - 0mph
12:14:19 - 357ft - 243mph

I am supposed to have gone from 0 - 243mph in 1 second !

There is another equally ridiculous 186mph recorded in an equally short time of one second. This was not on a plane as the recorded height was 46ft.

This is an outrage  :angry-tappingfoot:

How's about this then? RAF Culdrose to Olympic Stadium: 8000 miles! How crap a satnav is that?

Turn off the data collection?

If you mean the Tokyo Olympic Stadium, then that's probably accurate !

My Garmin posts my max speed achieved as 476mph & that was on a run to Loch Rannoch (on a private road of course ossifer!).

So yes, accuracy is not always 100%.

Well if that is the case then panic over. I was very concerned that the local Buzzies could get the GPS data and prosecute on the basis of the data that it has recorded.

I was worried that they could for example dismiss the ridiculous speeds in the 200mph range, but then prosecute on the more reasonable, but equally untrue, speeds of say 95 -110mph.

We have very low speed limits here and doing 95mph would be a very very serious business - the kind where the Magistrate would be asking for Probation Reports before handing out a prison sentence !

That is why I am horrified to see these errors on my GPS data, because over here you would do prison time for those speeds !

If you had a few km/miles worth of speeds like that, then it could possibly be used against you (I think they'd need good cause etc etc though) but as it's a consumer bit of kit, and simply due to the limitations of technology, there's no way it can be used as the only bit of evidence.

And "RAF" Culdrose is actually RNAS Culdrose, a Royal Naval Air Station.
