Help please with engine problem
« on: June 17, 2012, 20:27:04 »
On my way down to silverstone my vee k7 suddenly developed a engine fault, basically the engine management /oil light came on with F1 fault.the engine started missing and would not rev without spluttering and farting.I stopped and killed the engine and restarted it ,the light went out but still sounds really sick.up to top gear it makes clunking noises and misses like hell.if it was a four cylinder bike I would describe it like it has dropped a cyclinder but I am guessing it is an air intake problem or intermittent plug or fuel injection system, but am just guessing.can anyone please advise me what I can check myself without going to the expense of taking it to a dealer.

The FI will provide a code that pinpoints the problem device. See http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,7061.0.html

worth a visual inspection, lift the tank off and its right in front of you. simple fix if it is.

That won't cause an FI.

Leave the dealer mode jumper in place until it acts up again and then the code will show. You had a soft FI that resets when the ignition is cycled. An alternative would be to have a dealer use a Suzuki SDS tool or get a HealTech OBD tool to read the past code.

I took it to a dealer last Friday,I called in today and he says that there is no fault showing on the diagnostics machine but he thinks it is a oxy sensor that is causing problems.he is looking deeper into the problem rather than changing the sensor as a new one is£250 .what's your thoughts anyone?

Can't yuo get an item which bypasses the sensor for about 20 quid from ebay anyway?

He says that's how much they are but if I can find out what size resistor it needs then he can bypass it. So the question is now does anyone know what size resistor I need

An O2 sensor eliminator would be a far cheaper option.....like this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Oxygen-o2-sensor-eliminator-Suzuki-SV-1000-S-SV1000S-2003-2007-/261038326551?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3cc718c317

Or contact Dynojet - the power commander people, they do an eliminator for around £25 iirc.

Sheesh, it'd be cheaper to buy a power commander with the eliminator than pay the exorbitant fees the dealer wants. A replacement sensor in the USA is around $55.

Except for the Glee, USA Stroms don't use oxygen sensors.
