FIRST TRIP ON NEW WEE
« on: July 02, 2012, 09:40:17 »
I've just come back from a  trip to northern France on my new 2012 wee ..  I knew it was going to be a good bike before I left but it just excelled at everything. it was so comfortable , feeling no bumps through the seat at all , no wind hitting me & only a very slight wind noise around my hat [ screen set on std & I'm 5ft 9ins ] . also very smooth for a twin, as smooth at 50 as it is at 90 ... but the thing what amazed me was the miles I was getting to the gallon ...going down the M11 to Dover at a steady 70mph got 67mpg ... later in France riding at a steady 60mph got 77mpg and then when I went out for a steady run round the french side roads sticking to the legal limit [55mph] got an unreal  83mpg ... all these calculations were done with gps not speedo readings & a smaller rear sprocket fitted before I went .I had a topbox & tankbag on but no panniers .. but on the other hand the mpg drop like a stone when you start to really open it up ...I was  riding steady to save petrol as its 1.52 euro a litre over there "but" later when I worked it out , due to the high exchange rate at the moment it worked out at £1.23 a ltr so really it was better than over here ..and by the way the weather was great,  sunny warm & never saw any rain until I got back to the uk ...

That's a very good MPG for the New WEE,

I wonder, did you work out how much you were averaging to the tank?
I've got an 08 VEE and can only achieve 215 on the tank, but then again I do ride "Just over" the speeed limit on most trips. :auto-dirtbike:

My new wee gets 195 to 210 from a tank, that is before the first fuel warning flashes (the wee petrol symbol flashes - the last bar is still there). On a gentle run I reckon you could probably squeeze 250 out of it, but you would be worrying for the last 20 miles. I fill up at 200.

One exception. I rode from Luton (ish) to Glasgow (ish) in really strong winds two weeks ago and only got 185 before fill-up time.

A BMW may have a 300 mile tank but I only have a 200 mile bum.

It has a 20 litre tank so the ranges would be 295, 339 and 365 miles at 67, 77 and 83mpg. You wouldn't want to run it dry though, so allowing 2 litres for not quite filling it and finding a garage to fill up would give you 265, 305 and 329 miles respectively. I'd be interested in what the fuel consumption drops to when pushed to 80-85 mph.

When it gets to the last bar you have 4.5 litres left, when the last bar starts flashing you have 2.5 litres left, if you trust the spec sheet.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

Yes good miles to the gallon is brilliant, but has anyone ever thrashed their new model 650cc V-Strom and I wonder what the miles to gallon is when it's ridden HARD..? (like you stole it)

Anyone....? Any idea roughly...?

WTF is ridden HARD? Is it on a mountain road? a Motorway? a racetrack? or maybe in a 14 year-old's imagination?

Has anyone any idea? even roughly?

well if you want hard riding mpg just look at road tests. they don't pay for petrol so just thrash the balls off everything they ride ....

Never given mine a prolonged thrashing so I always get 60+ mpg.

When Ride did a 3 bike road test back in February (DL650A L2, Multistrada, & 990SMT) they achieved around 49mpg for the Wee2. Bit of an unfair test in my opinion, but I bet they rode it really hard just trying to keep up with the other two bikes.

I regularly get mid 60s.
The road test mpg figures are ridiculously low. What is the point of them reporting mpg figures that have nothing to do with how most people ride? What exactly are they trying to show?

These publications are obsolete as a means of passing on information, that's on the internet. They are to motorcyling what WWF "Wrestling" is to sport, poor quality entertainment. I actually think they could replace most of the journalists with a computer programme. Just give it 50 phrases like "Knee down" and "Ridden Hard", insert todays model to trigger some more ("BMW reliability", "Italian Character", "Triumph Brilliant") and RoboJourno V1.4 will be getting his own column in no time.

august edition of "motorcycle sport & leisure" took a group of bikes up to whitby to see what they could get to the gallon riding as steady as possible ....the new v strom came in second to the Honda nc700x ...the Honda did 94mpg and the v strom 77mpg .....
