Adding (SMALL) Aux Lights
« on: March 10, 2012, 19:15:30 »
The Strom has a couple of tabs on the fairing frame to which you can fix aux lights.  There are two poppers in them, supporting the front fairing undertray if they are currently unused.

There isn't much clearance to the top of the mudguards so MAKE SURE THAT YOUR LIGHTS WILL FIT WHEN THE FORKS ARE COMPRESSED before going too far.  I have fitted a pair of Rigid Duallys which DON'T clear.  Their fitting bar has horizontal adjustment so they are shoved as far outboard as possible.  THIS ISN'T ENOUGH AND THESE LIGHTS SHOULD NOT BE USED IN THIS FITTING.

The only panel you need to remove is the fairing under panel/tray which is peasy.

The tab

The trick bit....  The tab is inaccessible once the panel is back on and if the nut must be on the top and you won't be able to access it you have to TIGHTLY strap the nut onto the top of the tab (washer underneath).

Do this with the bolt attached, as it'll then line up once the tray is back on.

Port and starboard ready for the tray to go back on.  Remove the bolts before the panel goes back on, the nuts will stay put.

Wires go easily under the boomerangs.  If you look at the far right of the red wire there is a small rubber block.  Pull the wire under the block - it doesn't sit on the frame very heavily.

Except that the mudguards foul the lamps.   :angry-tappingfoot:

SO DON'T DO THE MOD WITH THESE LAMPS - but the principle stands and smaller, flatter lights could be fine - like those LEDS bars that are all the rage atm.  Up to you to check.

I was about to ask about that. Every post I've seen about mounting lights directly there instead of on a bar anchored there had clearance problems.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Got a light bar for £20 - sorted!

I did have them hanging under the bar (which I preferred) but fouling on the mudguard may still have been a prob.  May stick them further outboard as they currently touch the headlight lens - but the hole on the bar end will need enlarging.

NB Main lights would be whiter but the engine is off.

I have mine fitted to my bracket I made, then fixed to my crash bars. I was lucky, swmotech bars have a support plate with a hole predrilled. but I also bought some handlebar mounts which I could have used

I chose 500lm ones for daytime riding

edit* they look really close to the mudguards in the pics, but there is plenty of room. the angles arnt that good to show really
I'm sane, honestly. . . I got a certificate to prove it!

Not getting any vibes with the lamps and boy do they have an anti-Smidsy effect.
