New Helmet - Pinlock question
« on: November 24, 2011, 19:00:45 »
Just got a 'proper' helmet at last to replace my 'G-mag'? with a Shoei SR1100 - big thanks to 'Dividoris' for Chrissy pressie & BD combined.
Fantastically comfortable once on but tight to get on (and off!!) and loads less wind noise than previous.
It has the Pinlock visor system and came with the clear visor which I've fitted but I notice that on the packaging it states ''Daytime use only. Never use Pinlock fog-free lens at night" -------EH?
So I did use it at night and found no problems apart from almost imperceptible double star type minor light glare - not an issue at all.
Can anyone tell me if it really is that bad to use at night and why?
Cheers
M

As you've spotted the double reflection/glare is the issue. It's only to cover the manufacturers arse really and not a massive issue. Ride safe  :thumb:

I rode with a pinlock on an Arai Condor through the winter a couple of years back with no issues at all. just be carefull how you clean it as they are very easily scratched...

Just one thing I can mention is that pinlock do two types of insert. I found the standard one interfered slightly with my vision at the bottom edge of the visor on my Shoei Raid 2, where it seals against the plastic of the visor. I discovered that they do a race version which is a bit wider (top to bottom) so it fits lower down to cover where the visor meets the helmet seal. I does mean that the seal won't close quite as tightly as it otherwise would with the extra thickness of the pinlock insert but it doesn't get in the way of your line of sight.

My Nolan is fully pinlocked up too - Never take it out, and never have problems in the dark either!

As 2112 mentioned, they are so easy to scratch it is impressive, don't be using a shirt sleeve to wipe the thing clean!

I get the "slightly blurred" effect at night in my Schuberth C3 but thought it was due to my specs, not enough to be concerned about though.
It does what it's supposed to do a lot more efficiently than fog-free coating I had in my Concept, which wore off after about 18 months. Still, Justissimo's coating lasted less than 6 months.

My pinlock is in 24/7/365, it may refer to the tinted ones that conme with some Shoei's.

My Schoei Qwest is bad enough in the dark that I switch to to my X-Lite for winter.  The X-Lite comes with an own-brand insert that is pinlock-type fitting but the insert has no double glazing gap - it fits flat to the visor.  It's also less foggy than the pinlock.

I use mine all year around, wouldn't go without it at night either. +1 for being careful when you clean it, but no matter how careful you are you will get tiny scratches on it over time. When the scratches start bothering you enough at night, replace the pinlock insert, they are only £20 or so anyway.

Ahh, My Nolan may be the same, it doesn't have the silicon bead like a normal pinlock, and as you say, it is far more transparent than the pinlock I had in an old nitro lid! It is compatible with pinlcok, I am guessing replacements will pinlock not Nolan!

You might be alright though, the X-lite has pinlock pins but just lacks the bead. Best of both worlds?

I thought it was better venting of the lid compared to the cheapy Nitro I had, but the Nolan version of pinlock works better than the real thing IMHO. I would say the defogging is roughly the same, but the odd light patterns/halos are all but gone!

Quick google come up with:

Nolan Fog resistant insert - supplied as std
Full silicon bind (by pinlock) - optional accessory

Both available aftermarket, I will stick with the original!
