Oxford Heated Grips Keep Cutting Out

Like the post says really, problem or just an overheat protection?  Must say they don't seem that hot when they cut out....

The only thing I can suggest is to check the connections.

They have an automatic cutoff when the voltage drops low, this is so they will automatically shut off before draining your battery if you don't switch them off when you switch off your bike, so this happening along with you feeling that they don't get very hot suggests there maybe an issue with the wiring or controller.

May try Oxford as the web says there are some faulty controllers out there, may be I have one of 'em.  It tends to be long motorway runs when it happens which suggests it may be cutting out due to faulty high voltage protection, ironically.

Thanks.

Oxford is the best bet - a mate of mine has had similar problems with 2 controllers in the last 12 months. Oxford know of the problem I think so give them a call

How long ago did you buy them? Is there a warranty period?

what's the battery like on your bike. if its getting a bit old and the ampage is low and its not charging OK. they will switch themselfs off so not to drain the battery if its low.

A few more ideas...

The generator pre-2007 only put out 375W, the 2007 twin spark model's generator puts out 400W.

If you are you running any other extra electrical equipment besides the heated grips you might be using more than the generator puts out and as the battery voltage drops the controller switches the grips off.

Do they only switch off when you idle, like at traffic lights, or do they go off even when giving it the beans? At lower revs the generator will be putting out less power and if the battery is old then it won't take long for the voltage to drop too low for the controller.

New battery - has done this with old and new battery.  The cut outs aren't at stop - almost always when going.  They're out of warranty as they're already 2 years old on a used bike.

Suspicion is a high voltage safety cut-out as my bike charges on the high side - 14.9v.  Newer controllers supposedly won't do this.

Thinking of stripping the bike and doing an electrical sort out - or trading it.  Just don't have time to sort these things out.

+4 for R&G Heated Grips.

Wife's Gladius has them fitted. After trying them I then added them to my previous bike (650 Transalp) and have one set in the shed ready to go on the Vee, and another on order to fit to my Zephyr.

They have 5 heat setting - they are so warm that I reckon position 5 is only for searing off your fingerprints in preparation for a bank heist

OK R&G it is.  Let's hope the grips are better than their shocking website...
