MOT question
« on: October 06, 2011, 21:21:29 »
Wonder if anyone knows if the following amounts to an MOT fail. It's on another bike, not the Strom (which is only just getting old enough to need an MOT, wooo!).

On the other bike, all the electrics work apart from on the dash. So lights, indicator, horn etc all good. But the tell tale lights on the dash kind of do their own thing. There's no blue light lighting up for saying you're on main beam. Is this a fail? (the bulb's OK, BTW).

Some other or related gremlins mean that the dash illumination is 'medium' on side lights but then bright when on dipped beam.

It's not a biggie for me, and I can live with it if it's good enough for the MOT. If not, I will investigate, but if I can get away with it I will.... Anyone know any better?

Thanks as always for your thoughts, Geeza

No clue about the main beam, but the tell tales must work correctly for the MOT unless the actual indicators can be clearly seen from the driving/riding position.

,...Guess who's MG Midget failed ots MOT on tell tales!?!?!?!

Cheers Bencav, the green indicator telltales work fine. It's mainly the lack of the high beam blue light I'm worried about.

MG- top! Mine's a B.

Sorry, no idea about the high beam - I would have thought it would be OK, not as if the brightness of the lights wouldn tell you. Could always just pull the light out and pretend it was never there :thumb:

Was a fun little car - Vermillion orange, black mohair, full rollcage and leather seats!! Sold now unfortunately, made a silly mistake and had it stage 2'ed with a fast road cam and new suspension - Totally ruined the car for me, was an absolute pig in traffic as the engine wouldn't idle. Mine also had the 5speed type 9 box conversion, which did make a heck of a difference.

That sounds to me like you have a poor earth connection, possibly a block connector with some corrosion or a connection to frame / body that's poor....?

My workplace is about 300yards from the Abingdon site - in fact when we moved from Acton to Abingdon in '81 quite a few staff were recruited from the ranks of MG as it was at the 'closing down' stage. My uncle and cousin both worked there (these are two different people by the way, we're not in Wales!)

The St George's day run for the MG Car Club starts from our site as it's just off the A34 and also the town council isn't as friendly to their needs as it was...

I'll post up some pics if I still have them...
No bike at present.......

I also have an issue with lights- my rear running and brake light flicker with the indicator ?

Cheers Doe B.

I did some investigation and found a split in one of the tracks on the printed circuit board under the instrument cluster. In true bodgetastic fashion I have bridged the gap with wire, and now get a faint glow from the blue 'main beam on' lamp. I suspect I've introduced more resistance into the circuit than there should be which is which is why it's dim rather than bright. But am I bothered? Will let you know after the MOT which will be in a couple of days I reckon.
