Oil Filter Wrench
« on: October 16, 2011, 10:06:46 »
Morning all,

Does anyone know if the Filter Wrench attatchment is the same throughout the range?

Ill be doing most of my servicing at home and changing the oil is childsplay but never had these kinds of filters before, I figure I can either Brute Strength it or attack it with several various sized rocks and assortment of hammers but I figure getting the right adaptor and putting a Torque Wrench on my Christmas list should be a good idea

... Bout time I got 'proper' tools lol lol lol

I use this tool to remove mine http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-2-DRIVE-OIL ... 19c69fa93d

When fitting the new filter I just tighten by hand . I've'e always done it like this and never had a prob..

I've also got one of these but use it mainly on the car/van http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12-OIL-FILTER ... 519b5ac52e

Should also work on bikes..

I was thinking of the Pilars approach as well but after watching several scraped knuckles in accidental *clunk* its loose fashion thought I might try the cap approach... needless to say they are going in my eBay watch list as we speak :)

I have one of these. I use it to loosen the filter only, I hand tighten the new filter that goes on.

I'm pretty sure that all Suzukis use exactly the same filter. I picked up a cheap one on ebay some time ago. If you don't have one and can't remove with pliers a trick is to hammer a long screwdriver through the filter and use that to help turn it.

I used to have a decent one but loaned it out and never saw it again  :angry-tappingfoot:    But my old man has a device for getting into his jars of pickles (he's addicted) and so on...and it works!
Similar to this one... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MULTI-PURPOSE-JAR-BOTTLE-OPENER-STRAP-WRENCH-OIL-FILTER-/110752977837?pt=UK_Kitchen_Accessories&hash=item19c96453ad

Blood* cheap, too

Like Juvecu, I hand tighten my filters, using considerable force to ensure they stay in place until the next oil change. A piece of sandpaper in the palm of your hand provides sufficient grip, as a result, never had an issue with unscrewing it.

Groovy I shall invest in a filter and some oil ready for a 100 miles initial break in swap out to clear most of the shards out then let the 650 mile service be the big one for the remaining few then continue to DIY for the rest of the Stroms long life :)

Just a note on the hand tightening: don't over tighten it. Put a little oil on the rubber o-ring in the filter, spin it on until it seats, then 1.5-2 turns max. If you over tighten it you risk distorting the seal and causing a leak. The filter is in the perfect place to leak that oil smack in the middle of your rear tyre.
