Am I mean or is this robbery
« on: November 25, 2011, 20:06:00 »
A couple of years ago I bought a TomTom rider which I switch from car to bike . Recently, getting tired of the map showing me in a field when riding through new road layout on the A14, I tried to update the map. TomTom says my map is too out of date and I must get a new map for only £19.99 which I can then update it for only another £19.99. Smells fishy to me ... feels like Tom Tom want  a regular supply of twenty of my pounds a year.
I did not pay up. Was I being mean?
Also a frequent fault is when the voice command says "keep left" when the correct visual instruction is to keep right.
I am now looking for a cheaper alternative to TomTom. Any suggestions?

£40 for an up to date satnav seems quite good, getting a new unit will cost a lot more.

On the other hand sell it to me.

Fancy a brew at Loomies PM me.

Think it would be worth you updating it as you'd have to pay a lot more to get an equivelent GPS.  Unless you want to sell it to me.  lol

20 quid is much cheaper than my Garmin 550 Zumo. which costs around £80 a year or £120 something or over for life of the Sat Nav :bawl:
I'm sane, honestly. . . I got a certificate to prove it!

I may be missing the point ....but my 2 yr old HTC desire phone has a tab Sat Nav on it and can be updated as often as you like for free - I put it it a very basic rain free cover and it works a treat -

While I have to admit the charges to update Sat Nav's and the like are a bit salty, they have to make money somehow, or we get no service. It's a few bob for an update but that's how they roll, 'Your pay's Your money, Your take's Your chance'...

+1 for the HTC with cover. Free maps not just U.K. and Europe but anywhere in the world

Nokia Phones  that have GPS in them can get free maps ( Updated constantly ) work a treat. Though I use, when needed, a Garmin SX60 on the bike.
