New strange knocking/stalling noise when pulling away
« on: September 25, 2010, 20:52:29 »
HI

I started noticing this sound this morning, and I'm sure it's new (and not good) and it seemed to get worse though my riding today.

It is slightly hard to describe but I shall try.
- It does not happen when simply revving the engine in neutral.
- It seems to happen around 3k rpm when pulling away, just after the clutch bites and it starts to move.
- It sounds a little like one cylinder is 'stalling', a sort of knocking tapping sound.
- In general is sounds/feels a little 'rough'
- Seems fine at revs higher than 4-5k

I recently had a simple service: spark plugs, oil and oil filter.

Any ideas? :)

there's probably still a thread on here somewhere but it could well be worth checking your chain for a tight link or wear on the front sprocket, causing it to knock and the stalling feeling could be it slipping or not gripping the sprocket properly,it was what happened on my 05 dl,hope this helps

That is possible, thanks, I shall check the chain tomorrow, I really need to get an oiler to prevent me from forgetting!

I agree too, probably chain related, and maybe even a bit too slack!

Thanks for your replies.

I just oiled up the chain and the problem has seemed to go away, the chain is a little slack but seems within what the manual recommends. I was worried that it was something wrong with the engine but glad it's just the chain.

Ham...glad it's OK. The chain can be a source of considerable noise, vibration too if it doesn't get that tlc now and again. So much so that owners actually believe, understandably, that the bike is about to explode sometimes! Enjoy you bike.

I recently got a new chain & sprocket set because the old one had worn out (16300 miles). What a difference. Not rattly anymore.
