Sorry Folks, auxiliary lighting again.
« on: October 29, 2024, 22:10:11 »
Hi Folks,
I'm looking to fit some of the ebay, "BMW" style, auxiliary lights onto SW Motech crash bars. Not expecting any issues with connecting as I've already fitted the BigPie fusebox but am wondering if the mounting brackets will actually fit around the bars.
One of the photos in the advert on ebay show they fit a tube size range of 18-26mm dia but the crash bars are actually 27mm dia.
Would anyone be able to tell me if they've fitted these type of lights to the SW Motech crash bars without issues, or if there is enough "meat" in the clamping halves to allow them to be opened out if required?
Cheers All.

Can you swap out the clamps? If so then you can easily get different ones, like these that go up to 30mm.

I have the BikeVis running lights on my 800RE, and they seem very well made, so these are likely to be too. Mine are on a SW Motech lightbar though as I've not got any bars fitted.

Thanks Sir Trev,
I did actually price up the bikeviz lights and clamps but they are a bit expensive at the moment. The only problem I could envisage with using those clamps would be the range of adjustability.
I shall keep looking.
Thanks again.

Not sure about the ones you have in mind but the BikeViz lights have up/down adjustment built in via a pivot joint. Left/right is via the point they bolt to the lightbar. Either way, hope you get something that works for you.

1mm probably won't matter too much, just give them a shot! Best case scenario, they just fit, second best case scenario, you need to use a slightly longer screw.

What about these, even if you have to change the bolts they are cheap and you probably won't have to.  :thumb:

Apologies for late reply to your posts folks.
Lights should be arriving tomorrow (Wednesday), so hopefully I'll try a test fit of a bar clamp in the evening.
Have already spoken to the machinist at work and if necessary, he'll machine them out slightly on a cnc milling machine.
Fortunately, we carry a large selection of fixings if I need something longer but if we don't have what is required, our supplier will normally send out small quantities of screws/bolts etc free of charge.
Will let you know how it goes.
Cheers All.

A quick query, and I may have missed a post, has anyone fitted the aux accessory box for lights etc on the new 800re if so where was the best place to pick up a live (on ignition) feed, may thanks.

I used the bigpie auxiliary box, as advertised on this forum, and picked the supply up from the rear brake light feed.
Right hand side of the bike, just under the rear of the tank. I just pulled the side panel back a little then used my gynaecological skills to split the connector & put the bigpie connector in place.
If you want/need a photo of the position it'll be Friday morning before I can get one, but shout up if you do.  :thumb:

Mick, if you could that would be very helpful. ATM I'm considering the horn feed as it seems quite easy to get to?

I suspect that the 800 RE may have a similar auxiliary power socket connector, located under the seat as on the 800 DE model.

The location of the DE model aux power connector is discussed in https://www.stromtrooper.com/threads/dl800-auxiliary-power-socket-location-and-switched-power-source.442856/.

A few helpful pix are posted in the above link

Here you go mate. The panel did pull back far enough for me to get in there but obviously you will need to be careful & not bend it back too much.
I've also included a photo of the switched live 'spare' connector under the rear of the seat you mentioned in the PM.  :thumb:
