Strange Noise from gearbox - DL650 2012
« on: July 24, 2024, 21:32:10 »
Hi all,

My 2012 DL650 (35k miles) has developed some weird noise. Please, find an audio example attached to this post and a link below.

Noise appears only when the bike is in gear, 1/2/3. I'm not sure whether I've heard it at higher gears, but it might not be loud enough. All gears and clutch work as expected. Engine oil is fresh and at level.

The noise gets more intense and louder as I accelerate. Sprockets and chains seem to be in good order.

Has anyone ever encountered a similar issue?

Just to clarify. You can hear weird squeaky / grinding sounds from 0:05, and then it repeats on numerous occasions throughout the video.

Also, I can feel some extra vibration in the footpegs that correlate with the noise.

Have you had the cover off and checked the front sprocket?

Possibly an issue with the final drive.

Maybe a ceized chain link or sprocket carrier bearing.

Check everything that's related .

Hello,

Chain and sprockets were replaced about 8000 miles ago. Everything seems to be well-lubricated, too.

There is no noise when the clutch is in or coasting in neutral. Also, there is no noise when partially engaging the clutch at a slow speed maneuvers.

Basically, full gear engagement and it gets louder and more frequent

My friend's Gladius had a similar clonk/graunch when under load that wasn't evident when coasting or holding a constant throttle and that was a stiff link in an otherwise OK chain. I would definitely have the front sprocket cover off though to check for anything daft like the front sprocket nut coming a bit loose and the front sprocket wobbling under full load. Cush rubbers possibly although that usually manifests as shunt on and off throttle rather than a clunk. Sprocket carrier bearing is a good call as always from kwackboy, mine went out and I got a slight clonk under full load.
At your mileage, things like sprocket carrier, wheel bearings and cush rubbers are ripe for replacement if they're original.

Things that are worn produce more noise when under load.
Just because you have replaced the sprockets and chain .... Was it done properly with genuine parts? ( lots of fake stuff being sold)
I suggest you check the easy things first.
Are the wheels in line - check with a straight edge and do not rely on the swing arm
Check the chain: Tension, then damaged links.  Alignment, remove chainguard and look along chain as you turn the rear wheel.
Rear sprocket check Fixing nuts correct torque,  damaged teeth, is the sprocket warped?
Engine sprocket good condition and not loose.
Remove rear wheel and check wheel bearings
Check sprocket carrier bearing.
I can't think of anything else.
A too tight drive chain can ruin the output shaft bearing.
If it's something in the gearbox it is outside of my experience
I believe the lower gears are driven on one shaft and the higher gears on the other shaft and it is possible to have a fault, damage, wear affecting some gears and not others
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.
