Dipped beam replacement
« on: May 09, 2024, 17:56:52 »
Dipped beam isn't working. I have tested the fuses and they are in order. Side light and main beam are working fine.

Looks like fairing and clocks removal to get to the back of the light cluster. Seeing as I have zero mechanical skills, any tips, tricks, advice  or things to try before I get into dismantling my 2020 DL650 on Saturday?

(I must admit I spent 5 minutes trying to find out if I had turned the headlight off)

It is fairly straight forward, the only tricky part is the two long coloured nose parts either side.
The first time it is hard to release them, don't force them , slide them, but once they are off and you have a look at the way they slide onto the bike it is not too bad. Make sure you press the center of the push pins fully in before you release them and reset them before you put them back by popping them back up high.
I have done it 4/5 times for various reasons and can change a bulb in 1/2 an hour now.The first time took 1 and a half hours. I greased all the bolts while I was there.
You can find a copy of the service manual here, bottom left. The owners manual covers it ,not sure on the service manual.

if you haven't got the owners manual.

That's really helpful, thanks. I watched a video online but the bloke had problems getting those panels off as well.

Just a thought, as this happened to me after a fairly lively run over a moorland on the way home from work. Turned out the dip part of both bulbs had gone at the same time.

So long to change a bulb. What a ridiculous design. Presumably so dealers can charge a fortune, as indeed car dealers do.

Probably more just an after thought (perhaps designed by a different engineering team). The framework for the dash is part of the reason you can't get your hand up there.

Once you've done it a few times you can get in and out in half an hour easy... just not at the side of the road!

I got it sorted. The advice from here was helpful, but definitely not a roadside repair!
