happened? radiator problem
« on: June 11, 2019, 20:20:08 »
Back from a 2-day tour with friends, cleaning the bike I notice a spot in the central area of the radiator. With white blotting paper I clean, the paper absorbs and turns blue ..... coolant coming out !!!
I check the sleeves, I look good everywhere. but nothing not known any loss. I turn on the bike and let it idle until the fan starts, drop the liquid starts to come out.  :smirk:
So I decide to take it all apart, never done but I can do no damage. The next day I bring the radiator from a radiatorist, I explain what happened, no trace of stones or other traumas, in fact I set up a protective grid, he performs the necessary tests and we see the loss. Unfortunately, the radiator is "blown up" and cannot be repaired, if there is a liquid turafalle but it is only a palliative.  :icon_no:
This morning I ordered a new radiator from the dealer, a small charge of € 525 plus the liquid.
I'm really puzzled and angry.  ###
Never happened in my motorcycle life

Merry Crimbo all!! Was driving home the last few days and have been really pushing bike hard , usually sit around 120-140 kmh on autobahn to work last week I been pushing up to 190 and sitting around 160, in the morning was taking bike out of garage and saw there was a small radiator fluid puddle , I took the car that day , got
Home
Stripped panels checked the fluid in radiator was still full , so must have been only that small puddle which had came out, could see the streaks running from the left hand rubber tube where it has came from so undone the jubilee clip and retightened it , hasn’t leaked again and I’ve don’t maybe 150 km since! Was puzzled but seems to be OK now , could this have been from just high temp? Also my bike when I’m in autobahn will get to 3 bars in temp but normally sits at 2 bars is this normal?

Season greetings,
@superteso, sorry to hear about your radiator leak experience. Not sure exactly where on the radiator the leak was located, but I'm surprised that the radiator specialist was unable to do a repair to the radiator. What did they say what reason did they give why they couldn't do a repair. Was it maybe that the cooling tubes are possibly aluminium or maybe not worth the cost of a repair vs the price of a new radiator?

@Valzdl650, You say that your K5 650's normal operating temperature is 2 bars.... Is that due to riding in extremely cold weather? I've ridden in less that 10 degree Celcius weather and the bike takes a lot longer to reach the normal operating temp, which on both my K5 and K6 Wee is 3 bars.  In congested / very slow moving traffic on very hot days, I've often seen 4 bars but then the cooling fan would turn on and the temp would drop back down to 3 bars.  Travelling at a 160 - 170 kph (indicated speedo speed) for extended periods is normally not a problem for the Wee.
Check the oil level plus that you have a PVC breather sponge in the airbox, to filter any blow-by oil vapour or you could end up loosing / burning oil when riding at those high rpms. With the lower than normal oil level you could end up causing damage to the engine and stator.
Do you have an aftermarket exhaust on your bike or a K&N air filter, that could cause your bike to be running a lot leaner at constant speeds higher than 140 kmh?

Hose leaks aren't uncommon, although I've found they're more prevalent after a cold winter lay up.
My 2017 650 always sits at 3 bars and gets there pretty quick.

Hello thanks for the message, yes my bike usually gets to 3 bar and sits there but in this colder weather , rain etc I see that it flickers between the 3 and 2 bar, air filter sponge is in and engine oil is new as of 3 week have had the bike stripped down a few times in the last months, yes bike is as normal now , no more leak , only happened the once yes after market exhaust also I took the 02 sensor out and put the plug in the exhaust hole so if anything that would be a reason it could run rich , what would running rich do to it then? I still need to get around to getting the sensor back in just have to repair the wire on it
