Is this idle hammer ?
« on: June 12, 2023, 18:06:48 »
I have a 2015 V-strom 1000 that is new to me. After it fully warms up it displays what I think is idle hammer. It only does it when warm. As soon as the engine is loaded (even dragging the clutch at standstill) it stops and it goes when the engine is revved. The engine itself performs as expected. I've made a little video for people to have a listen.
Any advice is appreciated. It doesn't particularly bother me but I want to make sure it's not something like a worn bearing. The engine has 17500 miles and has been regularly serviced.
Thanks

I couldn't advise anything to your question but I could Dad dance to that rhythm.

Sounds just like mine, already had that at 24k when I bought it, hasn't changed in another 11k. Anything loose or worn would likely get worse with load or revs so I suspect it's the standard idle hammer. Others may have more knowledge though.

My 650 does similar, pull the clutch lever just past the free play and it goes quiet. In gear and revving it disappears unless lugging the engine at very slow speeds (but pretty sure that the Givi sump guard is reflecting a lot of noise back at me).

The dogs in the backround was the only worrying thing I heard in the vid.As others have said pretty normal.Getting paranoid about noises is fine ,a sign of a carefull owner. But when something actually goes wrong, it will be obvious, there tends to be no maybe about it.

That's normal, sounds just like mine. The clutch basket makes a lot of noise on these bikes. You can get them modified which cuts the noise level and makes the engine smoother up to that 3000rpm level where the engine naturally smooths out.
Your just at that mileage now where you'll start to notice the clutch basket slap, mine started a 20k miles.
It does no harm, fix it if it annoys you or just ride away at it.

Thanks for the answers. I thought it was normal but had to check just to be on the safe side.

Yep mine idle hammers, as did my Gen1 nature of the beast/design....after a 916 with an open clutch cover the Strom is bearable.

My idle hammer has now been cured. Took my bike to KC motorcycles in Hove (top quality independent) for a valve check. They had mentioned previously that they could sort the idle hammer and clutch chatter by balancing the throttle bodies. I was sceptical as this wasn't really mentioned as a cure when I was looking, but as the bike was very lumpy at idle and as the tank was coming off it seemed worth the extra hour of labour. Anyway since the balance the idle hammer has pretty much gone. If you really listen you can maybe notice it but that could just be the cadence of a v twin. The clutch basket also rattles a lot less. Will post a new video if people are interested.

I'm interested.
I have the same bike, just bought it with just under 7000 miles on it. It has an aftermarket exhaust and even though I've replaced the baffle (which the last owner gave me in a bag) it's still louder than standard. This seems to amplify the the erratic tick over. I must have my throttle bodies balanced, just like balancing carbs, it always makes a big difference for not a lot of effort.  :thumb:

Looking forward to listening to your next video.  :)
