New 1050 vs DE
« on: October 13, 2023, 09:30:58 »
Hi,

In 2015 I bought a new DL1000A which over the course of 8 years and 17,000 miles has been superb at commuting, 2 up touring and everything in between.

Now I fancy a new bike and don’t see anything better than another Strom for the money.

Pre registered XTs are very tempting, but with the new dash I’m leaning towards the new 2023 “base’ 1050, not the DE. I never ride off road and prefer the smaller front wheel, better windscreen, rubber pegs etc., of the road orientated model.

However I have two questions which I hope people on here may be able to help me with. Reading reviews on the web two questions came to mind:

1 - Does the DE have greater rider leg room because of the 21 inch front wheel? Would fitting the Suzuki adjustable pegs on the 1050 have the same effect? At 6’ 2” it all helps.

2 - I thought I had read somewhere that the DE has a different rear sub-frame which results in slightly more room for the pillion. That would be great when my wife is on the back. Is that true or am I misremembering / have misread.

Many thanks for any comments.

Peter

To plug a tyre, inflate and go or remove the wheel, remove the tyre, patch the tube, reassemble, inflate and go.
That is the question  :)

Of course you might be confident you'll never get a puncture

A 21 inch front wheel will have no effect on rider leg room. Yes the whole bike will be higher but the seat to peg room will be the same.  Can't  answer about the pillion.
As you already own a 1000 you will know leg room is a bit tight. I've footrest lowering plates on mine and SW motech adjustable footrests ( set in the tall setting with is still a bit lower than the low setting which grounds out to quickly for me) plus a Suzuki tall seat. The footrests can be fitted to any Vstrom and I think the new 23 1050 has an adjustable seat as standard.

I have had the 1000 but now have the 2023 standard 1050.
I used the foot peg lowering kit on both bikes and find the seating position about the same.
You also have the option to raise the seat with the fittings supplied with the bike

The wife finds the seat space the same for both bikes and a couple of things that I like but was not that bothered about before we got the bike is the cruise control and the hill hold.

I took out the new 1050, but purchased a pre reg 2022 1050XT instead. £3500 cheaper and more extras on it.

I don’t go off road.

No brainier for me.👍

I've had the 1050xt, and now have the new 1050. Seat on the high position and cosmo lowering pegs I also fitted bar risers. Perfect for me at just a smidgen over 6 ft 1.
The new 1050 is fantastic, but I mainly bought it because I regretted selling the XT. If you can do without a quick shifter and TFT there's a lot of money to be saved.
