Just done 15 k service
« on: October 02, 2023, 20:28:13 »
As title says, on 2018 AL8 strom 650,
Valve check, coolant change, plug change, clutch h adjusted etc..biggest pain was refilling coolant and getting rear cylinder spark plug in..no valve shims needed changing, really pleased as never done a twin before :fix:

Well, in my 2005 1K valves were still in spec at 80k miles so it is a waste of money to do valves at this mileage.

Well it never hurts to check and if you can do it yourself costs very little. My 1000 needed nothing at 15k but needed all 8 valves adjusted at 30k, a friends 1000 needed two exhausts shims at 15k.

I've now had mine checked three times, the first one was free as they were done on a recall at about 12k. The second two I paid for, one at 32k when they were OK but at 52k four were out!
I didn't consider it a waste of money on the second check when they were in spec & if I had tried to wait until 80k I might have needed more doing to the engine that having four shims changed!

You can't put a price on the warm fuzzy feeling of doing a job yourself, saving the labour cost (biscuits not withstanding) and then riding around knowing it's been done.

My bike always gives me the feeling like I have saved a life even after an oil and filter change. It seems to run better, do more mph, run quieter, go faster and even stop faster. It's all in the mind I know but yes, it is that warm fuzzy feeling that I pay for. It's worth it and definitely will make the bike live a little longer. My problem is documenting all the love I give her, I often forget.  :thumb:
