DL1000 Rectifier
« on: September 05, 2023, 13:19:35 »
Hi
I purchased a '08 DL1000 (Canadian Model) in the Fall of '16.
It had the "rectifier fire" and had burned with 7025 km on her.
I restored it and put it back on the road in June of '17.
Fantastic bike! Last week at 45,436 km the rectifier burnt out
along with melting the plug (the rectifier was a 'high end' aftermarket unit).
I have a new one temporary mounted and the bike is back running fine.
Just wondering  if I should drill hole in the plastic cover or mount the rectifier outside
so more air can flow over?
The temperatures here in NL, Canada do not not get too hot . Average summer's day is usually
20-25' C .
Thoughts? Suggestions?

I am of the opinion that the best to place for the regulator mounting, is were it can get air flow so that the cooling fins can do what it was designed for.

I can't help wonder what caused the regulator connector to melt, bad connection or over voltage?  Which of the two connectors was melted, the AC input or the DC output side?

Did you make use of an aftermarket stator?

More details please, enquiring mind...

For anyone interested in some research on the stator and regulator testing, this very long but indepth thread may be of interest, https://www.stromtrooper.com/threads/stator-test-results.431981/

Thanks for the reply:
The AC side melted.both plugs, one on the  rectifier and the plug from the engine.
DC side was fine.
The same stator was / is being used.
This happen suddenly, just as I was heading home from a 250 km ride .
(had done 350 km the day before) .
I think I'm going to mount it outside the plastic.

I would suggest that you download a service manual from the downloads section (if you haven't yet) and follow the steps to test the output of the stator and the regulator.   I'm concerned as to the reason of the regulator fire.

Let me (and the forum) know whether you find any reason for the damage and if there is any further over-voltage / wiring damage, once all damaged components have been replaced.

Hi
I have a manual and tested the output and all was fine.
Mounted the new rectifier outside for now.
Ran the bike and it's putting out 14 volts to the battery at 2500 - 3000 RPM
I'll take it for a ride over the weekend and see how it all goes.
I will keep you posted. (pictures of old and new below)
thanks

I don't see any pix. Sometimes if the file size is too large, it may fail to  up-load.

Something must not be right with your bike. I have reg rec behind the plastic and does the job and not overheating. I have the mosfet one (RMstator RM30504H). Must say, that is not looking very good, exposed to the view :(

Have you determined whether the regulator is getting excessively warm / hot, after a ride? A radiator company will have the required equipment to take a temperature reading of the regulator heat.

It's strange that your bike is regulator hungry. Do you have an OEM or aftermarket stator installed?
