Throttle body linkage lubrication
« on: September 22, 2023, 06:01:32 »
Hello everyone

I was just wondering what you use to lubricant the throttle body linkages.

I’m just having a look see and there doesn’t appear to be any form of grease on them.

I presume grease or perhaps white grease would not be the best.

I was thinking that something like a silicone spray lubricant would be better suited.

Or would a dry spray be better.

So I am wondering what you all use.

There doesn’t appear to be any sticking but given I’m this far into the bike it seems silly not to give the linkages a clean and re lube.

I presume a quick blast of good old WD will clean out any old lube, or would brake/carb cleaner be better.

I do apologies for my quite frequent simples questions of late but it’s been a few years since I last worked on a bike and some of my understanding may be a bit out of date.

Cheers

Ian

You can access them without taking the bike apart with a little fiddling. I used a syringe with a drinking straw pushed onto the end of it, filled with 3 in 1 oil. I had tried WD40, which worked for a few weeks, but after using the oil I had no recurrence before I sold the bike several months later. Rear one can be accessed under the tank after removing the seat. Front one from the front left side of the bike.

Thanks

Bike already stripped right down

So access easy, just wondering what people use nowadays.

I use something like this..... https://www.screwfix.com/p/wd-40-dry-ptfe-lubricant-400ml/36613?
Personally I think if you use a wet lube like oil or grease, even the original WD40, it will attract dust & dirt which could cause sticking again.
However, if you clean & lubricate it every 12 months or so I'm sure it'll be fine whatever you use. I still give mine a squirt every now & then, even with the dry lube, as it will wear off in time.

Like Mark said its easy enough to access it. I just spray a bit of GT85.
which contains PTFE. never had a problem.

The replacement throttle body I installed I squirted a very small amount of GT85 into (and allowed it to run into) every pivot point.

Since my OG one appeared to go bad with no "official" servicing / lubing, a little can't hurt.
