Insurance question
« on: January 26, 2022, 10:22:54 »
For bike insurance do I need to declare on the application form aprevious car insurance claim when I skidded on ice last year but the claim was on someone else' policy and a car policy nothing to do with the bike. Do I still need to declare it? :sunny:

I'd say yes you do need to declare it as they look at the whole picture when adding things to the price.

Strangely they don't seem to do the same in reverse if anything should reduce the price, eg NCB on other vehicles that is in excess of the one you want to insure

Look at the wording of the question. It will probably be something like.......
"have you had an accident or claim over the last five(?) years"?
Nothing about in a car or on motorcycle. Insurance companies can check on previous claims and if you make a false statement you may not get a pay out if you have to make a new claim.

Also tell them, you're a member of the VStrom owners club UK.  (if nothing else, just to confuse them)  :icon_wink:

Yes, and as a word of caution declare overseas accidents too. My mates dad had a bump while working in Venezuela in a hire car and didn't declare it to his UK insurance provider. The family motor (a very tired Mondeo estate) was stolen and after a lot of wrangling, hassle & problems the insurance company refused to pay out. They also threatened to void his policy if he pursued the claim in court which would have buggered his insurance for life. Spill it out...

Absolute daylight robbery and blackmail.

How on this planet can a bump on the otherside of the world, in a hire car that's fully insured affect your UK policy...?

Talk about scraping the bottom of a barrel to get out of paying.

Who's this insurance company , I shall avoid them like the plague...

I think you (and others) may find this of value and interest and as far as I am aware is relevant to all insurance in the UK

kwackboy, it wasn't the accident on the other side of the world, in a hire car, that affected the UK policy, it was the fact that the accident wasn't declared on the new policy application, if it had, it may not have increased the cost of the policy or affected any claim on it?
I'm presuming the application did ask the question "have you had an accident or claim in the last ??? years"?

He was insured through the AA when his Mondeo got 'liberated' and then dumped and trashed. The buggers got him as Mick rightly says on the 'have you had an accident or claim in the last 5 years' question. I think his employer may have recorded it hence the insurance got wind of it. In the end the car was 'only' worth about £1,500, a not insignificant amount but not the end of the world at the same time. An expensive lesson learned.
