Front calipers stiff to slide
« on: January 31, 2023, 12:21:28 »
Morning chaps! I've been having problems with the  front calipers not sliding properly.  After much investigation it seems the rubber insulators are very stiff to get the pin to slide in so I've ordered 2 replacement ones from Fleabay. Any tips for getting the old ones out and the new ones in?

Poke the closed end into the bore by hand and then use use a screwdriver to drive them out, you'll wreck it probably but who cares.
I tend to lightly grease the new one and then push it through with the blunt end of a drill bit or a section of metal rod that is close but under the size of the drift pin. Liberal use of Copper or Rubber grease on the pins when re-assembling will prevent a repeat performance.

When I serviced mine I found that what was making them tight was that oxidation had built up between the insulators and the body of the caliper rather than actually a problem with the rubbers or pins.
I managed to squirt WD40 down the sides of the rubbers using the that thin straw attachment thing and they then came out easily.
Bye the way we are talking about these aren't we?

Yep. That's the one. I think that is the problem I have. Decided to change all the rubbers while I'm at it.

I found using the back end of an appropriate sized drill works well to push out and insert them without any damage. Also a 10mm drill will clean out any oxidation build up.

+1 on checking for oxidation in the bore before putting in the new rubbers (or writing off the old ones if you were to reuse them).

Thanks all for your input. New rubbers arrived today. Old ones came out after a quick squirt of WD40. Lots of oxidation in the holes. Duly cleaned out. New rubbers went in a treat using an allen key to push them in. All reassembled now and sliding as they should. Test ride tomorrow but all looking good!
Thanks everyone for your contributions. Much appreciated.
