Lock problems
« on: January 18, 2023, 09:08:36 »
Hay,
Two lock problems on the '02 Vee I bought the other day.

The usual (?) worn ignition switch and I filed a bit off the wafers which seems to have helped.  Is there a replacement worth buying?  I know about the 100ohm resistor.

After I opened the tank in the afternoon, in the evening the key would not go in all the way.  Later it was OK again.  I think it was probably frosted up, is there a known problem with the
 fuel tank lock?

Thanks for any advice,
Halam

Personally I wouldn't put anything oil based into a lock to lubricate it so the first thing I would try before spending my hard earned on a new lock would be a Graphite lubricant.
A powder.....

or a spray

Try cleaning the lock with a contact cleaner, letting it dry, & then put the Graphite in. If it's the powder you use, don't put too much in, one it's not necessary & two it may fill the lock & you won't get your key in! (A friend told me that )

Or you could try this it's supposed to do both. I've not used this so can't say how good it may or may not be.

Thanks Mick,
I'll order the powder and give the fuel filler lock a good blast of contact cleaner.  The ignition lock was much better today after I filed the wafers yesterday, so I hope the powder will slow further ware.

Cheers,

Halam

Whilst you are waiting for the powder, get your good old HB pencil out and rub it all over the key pointy out bits. Get plenty of powder all over it.
I find this usually helps.

I was going to fix my ignition barrel... but now I can reliably turn it every time, I consider it an anti-theft device.

Until I can't turn it, when I'm 100's of miles from home. I suppose there is that!  :smirk:

Just to add weight to the use of graphite.

I used to work for Yale. Some of my major customers were electricity and water companies who would use our padlocks on the gates of compounds, substations and pumping stations. If the padlocks got sticky or refused to work we always sent them a little puffer of graphite powder and it always worked in freeing the lock.

When you get the powder, breathe on the key and then dip it into the powder so that it sticks to the key, then put it in the lock.
The older I get, the better I was.
