I had an F800GS for about 3 months and hated the engine.

I find it funny how we all have different opinions and experiences with bikes , personally I love my F800GSA , it's a lovely,  buzzy motor that ticks along nicely, not too vibey and I love it's versatility.

I can honestly say though , when I bought it , I didn't click with it at all ..

Seems odd a parallel twin should end up making the 800 longer than the v twin. Is it just the plastic proboscis?

the engine on the 1050 still has the rattly clutch problem

A lot of bikes rattle due to over quiet exhausts. My 1050 grunts through it's Black Widow can!

OK, couple of things from posts above having seen them side by side. The 1050DS saddle is the two part existing 1050XT style and appears to place the rider’s arse higher off the ground. The 800DS saddle is the style of the old 1000DL, a one part saddle which appears to be quite a bit lower.
The 800DS looks longer because they seem to have changed the rake of the front forks to accommodate the huge front wheel so it sticks out further and the configuration of the components is generally arranged horizontally along the front to back axis rather than vertically. This appears to make the body of the bike vertically thinner and therefore making it easier for the shorter legged to get their feet in the ground without compromising ground clearance. I think they had to do that because the bike is a wider in the middle to accommodate the parallel engine making it harder to get your legs around it. I am on tip toes on my 1050 but I could get my feet on the ground on the 800DS
Nod if you're passing!

So, Honda have brought back the wonderful Transalp.... Parallel twin, 21" spoked wheels.
So, Suzuki have replaced the iconic 650 V Strom....Parallel twin, 21" spoked wheels.
OK, the new Tenere and new Africa Twin have been great sellers, but do we really need more of the same?
I made the mistake of selling my Transalp years ago. I even sold my first V Strom for an AT. I won't make the same mistake again with my current V Strom.
I understand the cost pressures which push manufacturers towards the parallel twin and its flexibility in powering a range of models....but why the obsession with 21" spoked front wheels? I enjoy my Tenere, but IMHO it would be a better bike (for me) with a 19" cast front wheel.

I wonder if a  19" cast wheel from a DL would be a simple swap ??

Unlikely, I'd say. The 800 has usd forks. Spindles, bearings, brake discs probably all incompatible. Having said that, my mates ran ZX10 wheels on cbx's. Stuff that doesn't fit can often be made to fit.

Indeed other wheels can be made to fit. CBR 600 cast wheels to replace spoked wheels on a Cagiva Navigator no problem, the main issues may arise from the trail and rake inflicted on the frame. Saying that replacing the 21" front on a KTM Adventure R with either 19" or 17" isn't unheard of.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Maybe replace the whole front end with that from a 2014 on vstrom 1000, that way you'd get decent brakes also.
But how many would do that, or the wheel replacement? Lots of other bikes already done right in the first place!

Am I alone in thinking the 2030 deadline might turn out to be somewhat aspirational and flexible?

It looks like bikes will get an extra 5 years until 2035, under 125cc bikes may still go at 2030 however. The 2035 date is under review and as there are only a few suitable EV bikes out there (and likely to be out there) by 2030, therefore an extension is highly likely. As bikes make up a small proportion of the UK road users it seems sensible. Do we keep our fingers crossed for a rush of good, quality, affordable electric bikes or hope for zero (pardon the pun) increase in EV bikes to get an extra 5 years ? I bet there are going to be a LOT of December 2029 bikes getting registered...

So Suzuki have announced that the new GSX-8S will cost from £7999. Given that the SV650 was a grand less than the base DL650, that would put the new 800DE around £8999… but then the XT was an extra £800 for the spoked wheels, so the new 800DE could be nearly £10k!

That gets you a Triumph 850 with luggage, or a T7 if off road is your main focus. Hope they bring out a lighter cast wheel version for sub £9k
