2019 v strom 1000 rear shock.
« on: October 20, 2022, 19:23:23 »
Hi everyone.
Quick question. Does anyone know if you can have the rear shock revalved by somebody in the uk? I'm after a bit more rebound damping.
Many thanks in advance.

Firefox racing said they could do it but I ended up buying a Wilbers shock so can't say if they could. There is a rebound screw at the bottom of the shock, chain side, Hyperpro said turn it clockwise all the way in and then back 3/4 of a turn. This and the Hyperpro spring work well for me to 25k miles when it give up and just sat down everywhere.

Hi thanks for the reply. I think I might have to go the route of a new shock as well.

The Wilbers was good money and that was the main reason I went for it (525 quid with remote preload) but it was difficult to get set up. Wilbers had 15mm static preload which was way to much for a 90kg rider, I've been removing one turn at a time to get the feeling I want. Three full turns off now and I think it's OK but I'm not sure I could recommend. The Ohlins shocks I've used on other bikes where perfect out of the box but the price is crazy now for Ohlins. If I was to do it again I'd send the oe shock to firefox and give it a try. Good luck

The damping on my 1050 rear shock was very poor and had about a 1/4 turn of adjustment, that's all (any more than that made no difference).  I went to Luke at T-Tech who is one of the advisors for TrakTive and YSS and is the go-to chap for electronic suspension repairs for BMW's / KTM's / Triumph's / Yamaha's etc.  And how I know him.  Even though no company listed the DL1050, he did some homework and special ordered a YSS shock (he rates these highly), a spring for my weight and a remote preload fitted at significantly under £500 fitted and set up.  I can't recommend him highly enough.

Give MCT suspension in Stowmarket a call..
Great service and advice.. rebuilt my Varadero shock just when I bought the 'strom.
Works fantastic.. they found it didn't have the right preload to start with, re valved and regassed.
Will be speaking to them about my Strom setup over winter..

You don't say what experience you have in suspension set up.
I'm far from an expert but I would recommend you find a 'suspension specialist' near you and take it there & have it set up for you. Once that is done you can then see how the bike rides & discuss any further improvements required with them.
I tried to get my OEM shock rebuilt but was told it was beyond that point & recommended to have a new shock. I went for YSS (the cheapest option) but although it was great for solo riding it couldn't hack it for two up which is most of the riding I do. I had a stiffer spring fitted which did improve things but still wasn't right.
I eventually cut my losses and bought a Nitron shock that was built to my/our/luggage weight. Expensive (with the preload) but worth every penny as far as the ride has improved.
The lad that sorted it all for me was  https://www.ssr-suspension.uk/ .... excellent service. But I'm sure there are plenty more around the country that can do the same
