Anthrax

No, not the bacteria but the thrash metal outfit from New York are on their 40th anniversary tour and were in Newcastle last night. As a long time fan it was a great night and it's amazing to think they are still going and still very good after all these years. The crowd was a surprising mix of quite young and some quite old fans, probably a range of 7 to 77 !!! Obviously, being an old fart I keep well away from the mental moshing downstairs and had a nice civilised view of proceedings from the balcony of the City Hall. Not everyone's cup of tea I appreciate, but I had a cracking night out although I am a bit hard of hearing today...

I quite liked Spreading the Disease, but they went in a direction that I wasn't so keen on after that.

I went to see Death Angel and Sacred Reich in the space of a couple of weeks a few years ago, and it's amazing how seeing bands again after so long winds back the years. I was down at the front for both, but resigned myself to keeping an eye on the younger lads in the pit: picking up the ones who went down, and making sure nobody was being a dick. The same role as the older blokes who'd done the same for us 30 years ago.

I'm afraid I wimped out & started using earplugs for gigs after having tinnitus for a couple of days after seeing Sacred Reich & Sepultura at the Barrowlands. I reckoned I was doing my body enough damage in the pit that I didn't need to wreck my hearing as well.
It amuses me to see kids running around in circles at pop gigs these days, thinking they're in a mosh pit: I remember coming back from the Clash of the Titans gig at Edinburgh in '90 with the back half of my t-shirt missing, and the front covered in blood - only some of it mine. It was a weird thing: lots of injuries & bloodshed, but no malice or deliberate harm. That changed over the years: the younger ones thought it was a big fight & started throwing punches & kicking people on the deck.

I went to earplugs in my early 30s due to playing drums in metal bands and knowing full well my hearing was on borrowed time. If you get decent earplugs then most gigs sound better anyway since the bloke mixing is usually wearing them as well.
Saw Anthrax in 2002 during the John Bush years, most die hard will shoot me but I preferred them with him, Stomp 442 was a great record.

I have dodgy hearing which I can pretty much blame on Motorhead at the City Hall in 1982 on the Bomber tour. Still to this date the loudest band I've ever heard - or ever will hear now...

Good point Mr Nick about the early days of moshing, loads of injuries but zero intent. How times have changed, the daft yoof probably just stab each other now.

@2112 are you sure about the Bomber tour dates?, I thought it was 79/80? I saw Motorhead at Stafford Bingley hall, they were the loudest at the time, but I found maximum "ear ringing" was caused seeing Saxon at the Birmingham Odeon :D

Bomber tour 79/80
I saw them at the Apollo Manchester in November I think.
Can understand you getting the dates slightly out as if you were anything like us around that time, a bit of the saying  "if you can remember it all you weren't there" probably rings true lol

Now you come to think of it it was earlier than I thought, I must be thinking of the Ace of Spades tour ? Or it could be early onset dementia ? Saw Iron Maiden with Dianno at the City Hall too, back in the days when I had hair....

Part way through the concert on the bomber tour Lemmy points up and says "I bet you're all waiting for this" of course the crowd erupts in cheering, then he said "well tough sh!t we haven't bought it"  :)  then they launch into bomber
