What's this plug for?
« on: October 16, 2022, 13:17:43 »
Does anyone know what this white plug that's not connected to anything is for? Is it a switched live for accessories maybe? If so does anyone know where I could get the other half from?

UPDATE.

I've checked it with a meter and it is only live when the ignition is on. For some reason it only gives 9V but that should be fine to switch a relay shouldn't it?

If only 9v could it be that the contacts are dirty.? They look it.

No, I cut the tape off and it turns out that both halves of the plug are there. That half with no wires is a dummy blanking piece, so the contacts are nice and clean inside.
I'm getting over 12V at the battery so the main electrics are OK. Maybe a bad connection at the other end of wherever it goes.

What do you want to power.. ?

Some connections are lower powered than others,  some being 5v .

If you need good power, use the rear brake switch circuit.
The connection should be just in front of your battering under the tank mount.

I'm fitting heated grips, but I was just looking at using this to switch the relay, not to actually power the heated grips.

No need for a relay, just use the switched live on the brake switch circuit and the negative to the battery.

Heated grips need a good power supply, that connection you're looking at won't be enough.

As I say I wasn't going to power them from there. I was just thinking to use it to switch a relay to cut the power to them when the ignition was turned off.

What year and model do you have?  Why not make use the heated grip connector that is part of the wiring harness?
Without the bike model info, it is difficult to point you in the direction of exactly where the heated grip connector can be found on your model.
The other alternative is, as previously recommended by kwackboy, to power a relay from the brake light connector.  Or perhaps install a big pie aux fuse box as discussed in https://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=41509.0 to feed the heated grips and any other future switched accessory.

There should/may be a connection specially for the heated grips taped to the loom front left hand above the radiator. But, as suggested, the rear brake light circuit is ideal & if you do use that, connecting a bigpie fused relay unit to it will provide four ignition switched, fused outputs for other accessories.
