How worried would you be?
« on: October 04, 2022, 19:37:24 »
I am going in for knee surgery in a couple of weeks, it is at a private hospital and isn't cheap.

Do you think it's too much to expect..........

Dear xxx

I attended a preassessment at Werndale yesterday and was a little alarmed to find that the paperwork referenced surgery on my right knee. Today I have received paperwork from you confirming my surgery and again it all refers to surgery on my right knee.

Could you please correct your records and reissue the paperwork to me showing the surgery will be carried out on my left knee.

I wouldn't be worried at all.

They go through with what they plan to do and marker pen which limb gets worked on.... ask Snowstrom.

How pissed off you'd be if you woke up and they cut of your good arm?

In the early 90’s I got a huge splinter of wood down behind one of my finger nails,A&E had a go at getting it out but unknown to them a 30mm piece was left in.This after a few days caused an infection and so I was booked in for an operation to remove it.
As it was infected they left me until the end of the day,I was in the theatre and one of the assistants started putting some yellow stuff all over my hand, and I said to him “I wouldn’t do that if I were you”,he said “why not?”.........I said “it’s the wrong hand” 😂😂.Apparently they had put my I.d. wrist band on the wrong hand, it should be on the side NOT being operated on.

Let them do the wrong knee. Then sue them, and make them do the correct knee. Two new knees and a bundle of dosh. Result.

The problem might not be the wrong leg - you have control over that but the possible after effects, now that's a different matter . My mother-in-law wanted a 'new knee' so she could walk better. A lesser known side effect from this op is swollen legs...big time. Yes, you guessed it, she was in the 5%! Trauma was so great, her legs, both of them, swelled up permanently after a few weeks and she rarely went out for many years after that and walking was much much worse. Still, you probably  will not be one of the unlucky ones. Many folk seem to sail through knee surgery and wonder why they ever worried.
As for me.......probably :icon_no: but never say never!

My good lady had a new knee, done privately, at the Nuffield in Newcastle a few years ago. In on Thursday, out on Saturday morning walking under her own steam. Very impressive and she's never looked back. Physio is key and I didn't let her slack off, but she out-performed all expectations and was back to work in a month. Good luck with it an a 'yes' - 'no' sharpie is a good call...

My late father in law had both his knees done (at different times) both were done with an epidural so he was conscious throughout. If that's the plan for you then you can keep an eye on them

...but not when you're late!

Though presumably his demise was not as a result of the surgery?

Physio is key
Yes my wife's mum did all the exercises by the book but the elephant legs still arrived! Some bodies just react negatively to knives, apparently.

Haha ......... no, his new knees transformed his mobility. The only thing they told him not to do was kneel down on them. That was a few years ago now. I wouldn't be surprised if the new ones don't have that restriction.

@ Fat Rat ...... if you are offered cheaper older versions be wary of the CX500 model with the adapted cam chain tensioners working the knee joint.

Flipping heck, that's a bit unnerving! Having both done as said before isn't a bad shout... They wouldn't have a leg to stand on!

I had an epidural for my tkr 8yrs ago. I wasn't awake although I do remember the thumping as the surgeon fitted it. I needed 2 epidurals as I still had feeling in my knee after the first one. the epidural doesn't do your sex life much good but it could just be an age thing.
