2004 V Strom 650 side stand.
« on: August 21, 2022, 05:42:23 »
Good morning,

Does anyone out there know where I could source a side stand for my 2004 V Strom 650. It would appear that a previous owner has used the side stand as a pivot to turn the bike around and the inside edge of the "fork" at the top of the stand is badly worn resulting in a lot of play when the stand is down.

Thank you,

Dicky.

As an alternative perhaps have that section of the side stand heated up enough to force back to required shape or insert a spacer washer or two?
If you say that side stand turns is the reason, then I would suggest that you inspect the frame mounting area for residual damage. https://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=37150.0

Thank you Gert,

Good point regarding the frame. I've checked it and thankfully there is nothing amiss. Just been walking the dogs and pondering. I may well grind a section of the inner fork thingy to square it off and fit a washer. Currently the inner surface of the fork has a slight angle on it due to wear.

Cheers,

Dicky.

Take care that you don't remove too much material as to weaken the stand.
Perhaps post a pix or two for a second opinion?

Before grinding the stand can you grind an angle on a suitable washer. Glue the washer to a same size bar and use a file and or sanding disc.
Or
Spot weld the worn edge and file it to the correct size
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Here's a pic of the problem area. The right side is obviously worn. It's not a major problem though sometimes the side stand catches on the centre stand when I try and put the side stand down before dismounting.

Cheers,

Dicky.

Have it welded then grind/file it to fit.

Or buy a steel tapered washer.

Thank you very much everybody for your suggestions. I cut a washer in half and prised it between the side stand and it's mounting plate as a temporary fix which worked. I'll pop out tomorrow and see if I can track down a tapered washer when the shops open. I'll have to learn the Hungarian for "tapered washer" first though. :smirk:

Cheers,

Dicky
