Dunlop Mutant

Just wondering if anyone has tried Dunlop Mutants. My friend has them on his BMW 1250RS, and he says they are good in the dry, but unreal (in a good way) in the wet. The only downside for him is they look odd on a sports tourer.

Thoughts?

The first thing that came to mind when I saw the tread pattern was "Racing Wet Tyre" and a long way into this review the journalist say's the same. I read all of the link and they seem to be perfect tyres for V-Strom's of any engine size but longevity  hasn't been tested yet.

I spoke to a bloke on the Dunlop stand at the Overlander Event as Dunlop also make Avon and I am on my second set of Spirit ST's.

He said the Mutant would be his recommended tyre for the VStrom. He said I would get better grip (never had any issues with the ST's) but that they would not last quite as long as my Avon's.

The parent company is Goodyear. The Avons and Dunlops are now also made in France, having closed the Birmingham factory. Due to the environmental factors in the French factory, the quality of the tyres is better than those made in the UK...apparently!

Having used and been impressed by Avon Storms, I have tried the Spirit, which I do not think is as good. I am looking at the mutant now as I only here good things about it, or I'll go back the trusty P5/6

The same fate is falling on Avon with the Melksham factory closing next month.

I had a really interesting chat with the Dunlop bloke about some of the motorsports / slick tyres made in Melksham. There is a lot of concern from a number of racing classes that have / had Avon's as their control tyres, but the Dunlop bloke said that the volumes of many of these tyres are so low that it has been costing the company money to make them... volumes as low as 20 tyres.... a year!

I may well try the Mutant's next tyre change, but that won't be for a while yet.

Mutants or Anakee adventure for my 650? looking for some green laning gravel grip, no mud.
I like the looks of both, leaning towards the mutants, never had Dunlop before.

Vstroman, I was thinking the same, Adventures or Mutants. I've pulled the trigger on the Mutants as I think they will suit my riding conditions better. Hear a lot of good things about them 👍

Mutants arrived today and they look great! Getting fitted on the 23rd so will report back after I've had a chance to try them out 👍

Well, I got my Mutants fitted on Thursday. Unfortunately the weather was absolutely horrendous, to the point I almost cancelled the fitting, but braved the 25 mile ride to the workshop in the pouring rain. Needless to say the ride home was very sketchy on brand new rubber and the mist had also descended so visibility was awful too. Probably the worst conditions I've ever ridden in 😫 made it home in one piece though.

So yesterday was the first dry day for a while and took the bike out for a run around my local B roads to get a bit scrubbed in. They didn't feel skittish at all and pretty much gave me confidence right out the street. They had a smoother feel to them compared to the Battlewings that came off, more of a rounded transition that seemed to help tip into corners a bit quicker.Also coping well with any standing water and damp patches in the trees.  By the end of the ride they felt really good.
They are only about 2/3rds of the way scrubbed, still got chicken strips and the boingey rubber whiskers! Chances are I'll never get them over to full lean anytime soon,  but maybe one day 🤷‍♂️😂

Out for a 115 mile ride today in perfect conditions. The mutants felt great. 100% confidence inspiring. Probably about 5mm of chicken strip remain on the rear tyre 😂

Still not sure whether to get mutants or anakee adventure.

The Anakee's definitely look more like an adventure tyre. I went with Mutants because of the claims of excellent wet weather grip. Time will tell...happy shopping 🙂

I've got mutants on my 600 Fazer. They have been great in the wet.
I got 13k miles out of mine, all motorwway miles.

I can't say anything technical about them, but I bloody well love them! Perfect for the roads around me which consist of a mix of A and B roads with lots of loose gravel, uneven surfaces, farm mud etc.
would definitely recommend them if you fancy a change 👍😀

Do you find the narrow sipes on the front mutant picks up any small chippings?
Still haven't pulled the trigger, kind of gone off the Anakee Adventure, choice now between Mutants and Road6.

I got some fitted to replace the horrific A41s on my 1050XT.

I rode through the worst rain I've ever experienced the day after (flash floors and standing water everywhere).  I heard a plinking noise and couldn't understand what it was.  Only when the weather eased off did I see it was the gravel and debris hitting my sump guard - any other sportstouring tyre and I'd have felt it. 

The grip they give in poor conditions is utterly unbelievable.  Nothing has ever come close to how they deal with gravel and debris - that is where they beat the Roadsmart 4, GT2, T32,PR6 etc.

Utterly, utterly, utterly outstanding grip.
