New chain but, what size?
« on: August 20, 2022, 13:49:14 »
As the title really, I'm trying to buy a new chain but come across some conflicting information online which has thrown me a bit.
Could someone point me in the right direction in terms of size and possibly the best place to order from. Many thanks.

I've had a couple of chains & sets of sprockets (most would advise changing them at the same time) from these folk. I've always had good service from them, although it does appear they are short of products at the moment!
DID chain & JT sprockets are a favourite.  :thumb:

Likewise, although check the sizes you have fitted now as JT seem convinced the earlier Vees are 42 rear when Suzuki say 41, might still be true for the later ones.
I went JT chain as well and haven't had any issues with the Z3, rubber front sprocket is worth the extra if you can.

Open to correction but if I recall correctly, for your model, the sprocket size is 17F / 42R with a 525 116 linked o-ring or x-ring chain.
Normally the chain is sold as a 120 link so you should first measure the old chain against the new chain before removing any extra links.

Here in lies the confusion Gert, JT list the Vee and Veek as 17-42 in Europe but 17-41 in the US. Many after market parts sites stock JT and so they copy this information downstream. Suzuki seemingly list it as 17-41 globally and OEM parts sites all state 41 rear as well. My bike had JT 17-42 when I bought it and the Speedo was off by quite a bit. Reverted to 17-41 and it seems much happier. Don't think the single tooth affects chain length at all but may be worth counting the teeth at present if the sprockets are still original.

The 2014 on face lifted(ruined to some) models use 17 tooth front sprocket, 41 tooth rear as oe. The chain is a 525, 116 link but as Gert say the two I've bought have came with 120 links so had to shorten.
You can go down one tooth on the front to a 16 or two teeth up on the rear to a 43 without touching the chain. Both are popular mods but I've tried both and like the oe setup better.
The newer models don't have the overdrive top gear of the older bikes so if you lower the gearing with one on the above sprockets it makes the bike much more buzzy on the faster roads, motorways etc.
I've seen that JT always say a 42 rear but I don't like their sprockets so wouldn't buy( had one once that was oval from new).

I wonder whether anyone has perhaps had the L7+ Veek traction control warning light come on, after changing to a non-stock sized front or rear sprocket?
Would there be a difference for the ECU programming to detect the new sprocket size as wheel slippage?

Gert , the traction control, I believe, uses the ABS sensors, it shouldn't make any difference what size sprockets you have.

Also, if the speedo is connected to the ABS sensors , changing sprocket sizes shouldn't alter the speedo.

I seem to remember someone had difficulty with the traction control after changing the front sprocket to a 16 tooth over on Stromtroppers. I had no trouble with either sprocket and preferred the 43 rear over the 16 front.
On the 2014 on 1000 the speedo works of the front wheel and sensor so you can change away and not affect the speedo.

Thanks. I think that the above is worth keeping in mind in case the TC starts lighting up after anyone changed to a non standard sprocket on their 17+.

The Stromtrooper thread that comes to mind is https://www.stromtrooper.com/threads/dunlop-trailmax-mission-end-of-service-abs-and-tc-issues.438549/
