Front brake discs, 650 v strom, 2017

My front brakes have always squealed a bit, and recently it's got worse. I had a look with the intention of replacing the pads and both discs have quite a bit of grooving on them. I know this is normal to some extent but what is too much, and might I be better off replacing the discs at the same time as the pads. Mileage is about 12000.
Seems a bit premature to me, and the grooves are about 2mm.
Thanks for any advice!

If you've got grooves in your disc that are 2mm deep, they're scrap.
There were some for sale on ebay off a 500 mile bike.
But they shouldn't be trash at 12,000 miles, if that's road use.

2mm at most, but yes, as I feared they ought to be replaced, many thanks for your reply. All road use since I got the bike at about 6000miles so I've no idea why or how, and I'm not a particularly hard rider.

I've usually changed disks around the 40k mark, but I've known of some needing changing due to wear in 4k.
Our GSX1400 needed the disks changed at 25k, but that was due to a slight warp caused by binding brakes that's a unusual problem for the GSX calipers.

Perhaps you've just been riding on crappy roads with lots of stones/chippings and they've attacked the disc surface.
I've just sold a Pan and at over 70,000 miles it was on original fronts with no measurable wear. The rear cracked at around 50,000 miles probably from heat build up. The rears will normally run warmer on more enclosed bikes due to lack of air flow. The rear on the Pan would fade away on passes even with new'ish fluid. It first happened on the Stelvio.
