Not using bike for two to three months
« on: March 22, 2022, 17:32:08 »
Will be putting bike into storage in my garage for two to three months. What do you recommend I do before putting it away? Disconnect battery, oil change, fill up petrol tank? Or is two to three months short enough to just give it a good clean and put the cover on ?

For that period of time I'd brim the tank and disconnect the battery.

Mine are going to be parked up for at least 4 months I have brimmed all 4 tanks with full fat premium petrol and they all have optimisers fitted.

Why fill the fuel tank?
I've not heard of that before, what is it meant to do, or prevent ?

Temperature changes in a half full tank can cause condensation and rust in the tank over long periods,  filling the tank will stop this from happening.

Why storing MC now? Spring is knocking on the garage door

Disconnect battery, charge it and store it in a room temperature. Either fill (with high octane, Max 5% ethanol) or empty the tank... different religion in that

Do you mean just fill the tank with petrol or is there any other chemical to add? I think I read somewhere about adding some other liquid to the petrol.
I will be going overseas for some time. Have been riding all winter or most of it as it's been so mild. Got a 175CC scooter waiting for me overseas so we'll be going touring on that. Small roads over there so the bike is well suited. Thanks for all the tips and have a good spring riding.

I have read about adding fuel stabiliser if leaving fuel for more than 3 months. Not used it personally but can atest to mowers and garden machines bluntly refusing to start from year to year unless drained and topped up with fresh dino-juice despite the old stuff still looking and smelling like good fuel. Granted though, these are 50 year old machines, with carbs, running lead replacement fuel :)
My bike doesn't usually go a full 3 months without use these days so I tend to just brim the tank with premium and leave on an Accumate over winter but then she lives in a nice warm garage which probably helps a fair bit.

If you do use a fuel stabiliser, remember to give the bike a good shake to mix it in before trying to fire it up as I found it settles to an extent & it doesn't burn well when it does.
