Lavalier microphones
« on: September 15, 2021, 20:56:53 »
Having sold my BMW recently, I decided to splash out and buy a decent action camera so invested in a nice new DJI Osmo. Bought the mic adapter and a cheap lav mic. Picture is brilliant but the sound is crap. Terrible distortion. Fitted a dead cat today and went out for a test ride. Better, but still clipping at higher speeds. Sadly, the Osmo does not have the facility to alter the mic input level.. I have another mic in the post which I hope will be better but not expecting much. My question is, has anyone found a decent lav mic that doesn't break the bank that will work with the Osmo. I am using the latest firmware. Recommendatons please chaps.

What mic input does your camera have?

Sorry, should have said. It's a  TRS 3.5mm jack. I was hoping to find someone using the Osmo camera and had found a solution.

OK - so I have answered my own question. After much faffing about I have ended up with the following set up.

Photo 1: Drift Ghost mic fitted with a "dead cat" behind the chin bar
Photo 2: In line volume adjuster from Amazon (cheap)
Photo 3: Male end of cable from mic attached to bottom of GoPro mount using Sugru glue
Photo 4: Female end of adjuster cable now connects to fixed male plug. This means the whole camera set up can be removed in one piece leaving the mic setup in place.
Wind noise is vastly reduced and voice quality much improved.
