Puncture ultraseal and plugging Tyres
« on: October 09, 2021, 13:58:27 »
What do you think of this product? Recently I have a puncture and have been told by the local garage that they won't sell me a puncture repair kit because they may get sued if I have an accident! Can we not just plug those tubeless Tyres? It seems the tyre companies want us to buy a new tyre every time we have a puncture. This seems like profiteering and will get expensive.

I can't comment on the sealant stuff, never used it & doubt I will.
I carry something like this kit on the bike. (& a 12volt air pump)

I have been lucky enough to require the use of it just the once. The puncture happened when the tyre was on around 1000 miles from new and a couple of days before a long weekend trip. I used the plugs & it stopped the leak but I wasn't happy in my mind so I took it to a motorcycle garage that sells & fits tyres to ask their opinion knowing that if they said it was unsafe I could have a new tyre fitted.
Once the tyre was off they said my repair was fine & 'probably' would be OK, however I elected to have a proper repair done with a mushroom type plug from the inside. Cost was £25.
The repair was still good 5000 miles later when the tyre was changed.
It will depend on where & how big the puncture is of course. Mine was a small(ish) piece of metal bang in the middle of the tyre.

Tyre fitters won't want to sell you that sealant as it makes their job so much messier when you come to change tyres. It had been used in the tyres on the SV I did up & it had to be forcibly removed from the rim as it had dried onto it, causing some noticeable imbalance.

Are you riding to a garage in California? Never heard such utter pish in years - seriously, I'd find another garage.

My car does not have a spare wheel. It came from the factory with an air pump and a can of sealant. Does this mean, if I have an accident, I can sue Nissan?

Been in the tyre trade all my working life, now run my own business.
I’d never recommend sealants in road tyres, the temporary aerosols are OK for emergencies. out of all the plug kits the Dynaplug doesn’t require reaming out a small hole to fit a plug, makes a permanent mushroom type repair less effective.
But, a bike owner can do whatever thinks best for them, we in the trade are more restricted by what we can do.

I have had a few punctures over the years. Mostly while away on holidays.

After trying various solutions I settled on this solution (see short video).

Works well on cars as well.

I have had a few punctures in the last few years. I have used my Stop and go repair kit. with the allen key type tool. always carry it when touring Europe or uk. I also bought a small folding high pressure bicycle pump from Halfords. about 10" long. blows the motorbike tyre up in a couple of minutes. I have had 3 punctures in my car tyres that I repaired.

Dynaplugs & Airman pump here. Used them, happy with results. Not concerned that Ryan push tested one back in, you'd be damned unlucky to replicate that on the road

I had a BMW GSA some years ago (not as good as my VStrom 650 DL ) I had a new rear tyre fitted and then got a puncture before I had even worn it in. I took it to a garage who pluged it and the tyre was good for the rest of it's life and I do take them very close to the 1mm.......... Just saying.  :auto-dirtbike:

Angus.

With respect, don't use them anymore.

Not sure how a garage can sell tyres but not offer a repair service ..   .

There's plenty of decent repair kits out there , just don't fill your tyre with any liquid what so ever.

Got a puncture in a perfectly good car tyres 3 weeks ago. Screw through the middle of the tyre.
I plugged it using the bike repair kit with sticky strings.

Obviously kept an eye on pressures and so far it hasn't dropped a psi in about 1500 miles.

It was actually harder than I thought to get the string through the hole but a bit of brute force and swearing did the trick.
