GPS mount.
« on: March 25, 2021, 00:16:36 »
Have just fitted the Tomtom lockable mount to my Cosmo Ram Mount plate and the thing bounces like a bouncy thing. Does anyone know if the Cosmo Bar Mount would be a better bet?

I find there is a tiny bit of wobble in the TomTom mount itself due to it being able to rotate.
I have a similar plate mount from Marcellus which also flexed too much when I first installed it. I put a couple of large stainless penny washers under the nuts at the base of the plate and they've sured things up no end. I'll take a photo in a bit but should be fairly self explanatory.

I've just realised the Cosmo mount has 4 mounting points from what I can see so perhaps the wobble is just in the TomTom bracket as I can't imagine the plate flexes that much. Mine is only 2 bolt so the flex was at the bolts hence the washers.
If the wobble is in the TomTom part then a different mount maybe won't cure it.

Hi. Where is the play coming from if you manually grab the unit and wobble it by hand? You might be able to determine this visually and try and isolate the movement first before looking for another solution? I've bought this exact mount and will be looking to use it when lockdown eases. If I fit it and evaluateit I will feed back here.

@Rixington43, you seem to have a Womble trapped behind your Sat Nav mount.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Had a play today and the movement is in the plate. My last GPS (Zumo 550) was mounted to the bars but fouled the tank bag so went for one mounted above the dash. From what I can see the plate needs a gusset welded to it to stop the plate flexing. I am going to weld a gusset to the plate and will send my results to Cosmo.

You might find that some movement comes right from the well nuts. They are fixed into the very thin plastic of the nose with no internal support or reinforcement. This, plus the fact they are rubber, allows a fair bit of wobble which can be amplified by the length and weight of the gps mounts. Plus, if well nuts have perished or been lost during screen changes, they may have been replaced with new, skinnier ones.

Do you have a picture with the TomTom fitted to the powered mount.  I have a 410 and the lockable kit and it is very large and ugly but not yet fitted to the Vstrom. Looking for a solution that looks good and doesn't get in the way of the bike's clocks.
