Touring seat pad.
« on: March 28, 2021, 21:59:44 »
Looking for some advice regarding a little extra "padding" for the seat for long distance touring,  looking at 3D mesh or the blow up type.
Any help from your own experience would be great.

Airhawk is great. They are expensive for what they are, but they do make a big difference if used correctly. Most inflate them too much. If you feel you are on a waterbed it is too much. With the correct amount of air they look like they are not even inflated. They are to distribute the load, not fully support it.

Or a Putnams inflatable stadium seat cushion for a fraction of the price. Same applies: don't blow it up too far & it works a treat.

I used this on a 7000 mile ride to Istanbul and back on my Vincent Black Shadow in 2010 and my bum felt like new every evening. I have a friend in Canada who uses the same thing and does 20,000 + miles a year on a Vincent called the Woolly Mammoth after the Sheepskin.   https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182586955842?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-153316-527457-8&mkcid=2&itemid=182586955842&targetid=4585032212894226&device=c&mktype=&googleloc=&poi=&campaignid=398826060&mkgroupid=1302921538465191&rlsatarget=pla-4585032212894226&abcId=9300501&merchantid=87779&msclkid=27ab6521cec51f449a0e05408cb263e2

Haven't used this brand / make of seat cushion before, however it may be worth having a look at, https://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,36875.0.html (Wild Donkey Air Seat Cushion for Longer Rides).

There's a few threads on here regarding seat pads if you do a search.
We have both a sheepskin (winter use now) and a 3D mesh type used in summer. The mesh gives a bit of comfort but used more for the cooling effect it gives during warmer weather.
We (well Deb) also has one of these on the pillion seat (fitted under the sheepskin or 3D mesh) and she says it works well. Hardly any air in it gives best comfort. I saw it mentioned on here so I think one or two folk might have them now. A good bit cheaper than the Airhawk if you just want to try one.                                                      https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Motorbike-3D-Seat-Air-Cushion-Pad-Comfortable-Pressure-Relief-W-Cover/254856614235?

I use a blow up cushion, around £20 from Amazon. Makes a big difference to my tailbone comfort. As others have said, don't over inflate.
Minor irritation is keeping it in the correct place. The straps supplied are crap.

Funnily enough, I think I was the first to publicise the Puttnams product for bike use back in 2009 on the ukgser forum and others I was on at the time. I used them for a few years. When it eventually failed I bought another but it was clear that it had not been made the same and I suffered many failures after little use. I then stopped using them and shelled out on an Airhawk.

Wild A S S with additional gel inserts, expensive but comfortable the trick is to barley inflate them.
If you’re short in the leg they do raise the seat height slightly something to be aware of and the general feel isn’t for everybody, but they’ll take that lower back and numb backside feeling away.
If you ignore your teeth, eventually they’ll go away
